  • Day 1 of my road trip across the USA brought me to my favorite city in Florida, St. Augustine; the oldest city in the country, and easily one of the most beautiful. 👇🏽 I snapped this shot at Fort Mose Historic State Park. This incredible site is a U.S. National Historic Landmark, and the rich history of this place is something that every school should be teaching our youth. 👇🏽 Hidden away in the marshes of St. Augustine is one of the most important sites in American history: the first free community of ex-slaves, founded in 1738 and called Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose or Fort Mose (pronounced Moh-Say). Fort Mose played an extremely important role in the development of colonial North America. 👇🏽 As early as 1687, the Spanish government had begun to offer asylum to slaves who managed to escape from British colonies (the first Underground Railroad ran SOUTH to Florida from the colonies!). In 1693, the Spanish Crown officially proclaimed that runaways would find freedom in Florida, in return for converting to Catholicism and a term for men of four years' military service to the Crown. In effect, Spain created a maroon settlement in Florida as a front-line defense against English attacks from the north. Spain also intended to destabilize the plantation economy of the British colonies by creating a free black community to attract slaves seeking escape and refuge from British slavery. 👇🏽 Fort Mose was the first free African settlement legally sanctioned in what would become the United States and had a total population of about 100. The village had a wall around it, with dwellings inside, plus a church and an earthen fort. 👇🏽 The history of Fort Mose is far deeper, and far more interesting then I can convey on @Instagram so please do your own reading on it and learn more about the very earliest history of what is now the United States.

Host was always very responsive. Photos are outdated, furniture is worn and game table had a broken leg so we didn't use it. Outside area was not very clean. Overall it's a cute little house and accommodated our group, very spacious areas. Good location. Very quiet neighborhood.

Great host communication and accommodation is as described. Could use some update on the furniture specially the living room couch, besides everything was great. We only stayed two nights didn’t use any of the amenities as we spent most of our time exploring St Augustine. Location is great just 5 min drive from downtown and great location if you like to walk to downtown as well. Will booked again in the future.

Couch was in much need of replacement/ripped/dirty. Outside table had tiles that were all broken. Kitchen rug needed thrown away. Need shoes on due to floors dirty/socks will be dirty. Pictures do not match listing condition. Person was advised of these concerns when I was at stay. Said they fix these needed things for next person stay. I sent them pictures of conditions of rental.

Home had everything we needed and had convenient location for local attractions. Plenty of room to spread out. Kitchen and both bathrooms recently remodeled. Off street parking was a plus and neighborhood safe. Host was very responsive and check-in was a breeze.

The home was nice but could use some updates to some of the furniture, grass was not cut, and the foosball table was in need of repairs and could not be used. Check out is a bit early at 10 am and when I asked for a later check out we were only given 15 min. Upon arrival at 2pm we asked for an early check in and and they wanted to charge 50. They messaged 15 minutes before checkin and said we could check in early. We loved the city and the location was good.

Very peaceful place to stay. We took advantage and cooked a few meals in the fully equipped kitchen. Enough space for all 6 adults. Very close drive to old downtown. Great communication from the time of booking all the way thru after checkout. If we return to St Augustine we will stay there again.

This house was awesome. The host communication was great and answered any questions I had in a timely manner. The location was close enough to downtown but without any of the inconveniences. I liked the layout of the house and had the essentials for the stay. We will highly consider returning to this location next year.
