Dunes Rest

Enjoy some time away at our secluded Dunes Rest cabin. Incredible views of Great Sand Dunes National Park and the Sangre de Cristo mountains welcome you to this cozy getaway that has everything you need to relax and explore the San Luis Valley. Located a mere 4 miles from the entrance to the National Park, this cabin is ready for those seeking adventure as well as downtimeā€”sipping a favorite beverage and enjoying the expansive views right from the deck.

This cozy cabin is rustic in nature but loaded with lots of amenities to make your vacation experience comfortable and convenient. There are two bedrooms, each with queen beds, and the loft has two futon mattresses for sleeping as well. Please note that the stairs to the loft are very steep. The kitchen is stocked with all the basics to cook your meals on-site.

Dry air, little light pollution, and high elevation (approximately 8,000') make Dunes Rest an excellent dark sky viewing location. This community is certified by the International Dark Sky Association. The stargazing is truly stunning!

The cabin is located in a gated community that does not allow open fires of any kind due to the risk of a wildfire. We have a zero-tolerance policy on smoking of any kind inside or outside the property.

The cabin is primarily heated by a propane fireplace in the living room operated by the thermostat. There is electric baseboard heating in the bedrooms and bathrooms as well. There is no AC, so it will be warm in the summertime, but open the windows at night and enjoy the cool nighttime temps.

Due to its remote location, there is currently no Wi-Fi available at Dunes Rest. Most cell phone providers receive one or two bars of service, but not enough to stream digital content. We invite you to disconnect and enjoy time away from your devices during your stay.

Great Stay at Dines Rest

Location was perfect for our quick family adventure of the area. Beautiful view of the Dunes and the house had everything our family needed. Close to the park and Zapata Falls. Highly recommend and hope to be back soon.

We were very disappointed that the pool area looks NOTHING like the pics online. The trees and bushes are fully grown and encroach on the already minimal pool deck area. In addition, a large grill takes up half of one of the usable sides. Itā€™s difficult to have more than a handful of people playing in the pool or hanging out. The mosquitos are horrible by the pool probably because of the overgrown plants and debris in the growing areas. Lastly, one of the trees was constantly dropping its pollen pods in the water. We had to skim it every time we even used the poolā€¦.which wasnā€™t often. Wear and tear on the house is evident and maintenance/safety issues need to be addressed. Most of the exterior doors do not close properly and pop open on their own unless dead bolted. There were smaller issues as well. We did not reach out to Leslie about the problems. We were trying not to dwell on the negatives and make the most of our vacation, relax and spend time with family. The view of the marsh was pretty but not being able to use the pool area like we normally would have certainly makes the property not worth the cost. Had we seen the current state of the pool area prior to booking we would not have chosen this property. The other small things were: no extra blankets, no kitchen towels, no mixing bowls, not enough utensils or bowls, missing or broken lamps, broken/non-functioning sink handles. All could have been addressed in real time but we made do with what was available.

Perfect for Getaway to the Dunes

We stayed for three nights in late May. House was clean and comfy with an awesome view of the Dunes. If you want to be close to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and not camp, the Dunes Rest is a great option.

Stunning Views

Literally ... this was the best Vrbo that we have stayed in! As per the title, the view was dynamic and inspiring. Quiet, secluded, safe and private. The cabin was meticulously clean. The beds and furniture were top notch and comfortable. All necessary kitchen items were available. There is no TV (other than DVD's), no internet and cell service is variable. However, if your desire is to unplug and experience nature, this is the place. Birds, deer, pronghorns, etc. are seen right off the expansive back deck. Highly recommended.

Excellent proximity to Great Sands Nat'l Park!

The park was just down the road! The home is lovely & perfect for a family. It is well stocked & very peaceful! We didn't stay long enough to take advantage of the games there or the grill, and it was a little too cold/windy to sit outside at the fire pit, but we did gaze at stars from the deck & they were beautiful! Note: there are 2 sets of instructions, one for "check in" with the keypad number for the actual door, and another set for "driving & parking instructions". Since I had a physical map & my phone, I thought I was set on the driving instructions & did not check these instructions out. However, the keypad number & location for the HOA electric fence is in those directions, so make sure to take a screen shot before you get there. The cell service is limited (as expected). Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Loved Dunes Rest

It looked like the house was out in the middle of nowhere, and it was. But we were so close to the dunes, we could see it from the house. We had our supplies, so we were in good shape, and didn't need stores. The kitchen was very well supplied. Loved the postcards provided...it was a nice touch.

Amazing views of the dunes from the large deck. The kitchen is well furnished. A great place to unplug. My kids enjoyed the small dvd library, but consider bringing your own favorites given the lack of wifi and cable/ota tv.my kids really enjoyed the stream out back!

We have stayed in several homes through Expedia/VRBO and this one was not only the most clean, but also the best equipped. The towels and kitchen equipment were first rate. I always bring my frying pan and a few cooking utensils when we rent a house, but I didn't need any of them here.

There are lots of places to stay in the San Luis Valley but probably not many with this view! The view was amazing, the cabin was so cozy and quiet. Definitely recommend Dunes Rest! My husband and I were completely comfortable for our six-night stay.

A Delight by the Sand Dunes

This trip turned out to be a favorite for our Denver based family. The property itself had a lot to do with that! Very well appointed, had all of the things we needed to settle right in with out toddler, make meals, relax, enjoy the views.
