The Cottage

Saint Marys offers 'southern hospitality' at its best! The local people are warm, inviting, and friendly and it is not uncommon for locals to include guests in social gatherings. If you visit Saint Marys, you will love it and many decide to make it home. A visiting friend once told us 'I never thought I would want to live anywhere but Atlanta where my family and children are, but I'm ready to call my boss and tell him I'm not coming back'!

  • Dungeness on Cumberland Island, Georgia, is a ruined mansion that is part of a historic district that was the home of several families significant in American history. James Oglethorpe first built on Cumberland Island in 1736, building a hunting lodge that he named Dungeness. Oglethorpe named the place after Dungeness, in England. The next Dungeness was the legacy of Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, who had acquired 11,000 acres of island land in exchange for a bad debt. His widow built a four-story tabby mansion in 1803, over a Timucuan shell mound. During the War of 1812 the island was occupied by the British, who used the house as a headquarters. In 1818 Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee, a dashing cavalry commander during the Revolutionary War and father of Robert E. Lee, stayed at the house until his death on March 25, 1818, cared for by Greene's daughter Louisa, and was laid to rest in nearby cemetery with full military honors provided by an American fleet stationed at St. Marys, Georgia. The house was abandoned during the U.S. Civil War and burned in 1866. In the 1880s the property was purchased by Thomas M. Carnegie, brother of Andrew Carnegie, who began to build a new mansion on the site. The 59-room Queen Anne style mansion and grounds were completed after Carnegie's death in 1886. His wife Lucy continued to live at Dungeness and built other estates for her children, including Greyfield for Margaret Carnegie, Plum Orchard for George Lauder Carnegie, and Stafford Plantation. By this time, the Carnegies owned 90% of the island. The Carnegies moved out of Dungeness in 1925. In 1959 the Dungeness mansion was destroyed by fire, alleged to be arson. The ruins are today preserved by the National Park Service as part of Cumberland Island National Seashore. They were acquired by the Park Service in 1972.

Wonderful stay

We had a wonderful stay in the cottage. It was great to meet Hunt, and he was most welcoming.St Mary's is beautiful peaceful and charming. We loved it and will for sure return to the Cottage. All you need to get away and kick back at such a lovely setting

Relaxing getaway

Our stay was what we hoped for and the view was so special. Private with an easy walk to town with a beautiful waterfront and good restaurants.Everything we needed was provided. Very enjoyable!

Gold Stay

We really enjoyed our stay. The cabin was as advertised with outstanding views of the marsh and St. Marys River, and a short walk to "downtown" St. Marys and the shops and restaurants. Finally, Don, the host/owner, made us feel at home and gave us a wonderful tour of the property. We will return.

July 4th in St. May's

While visiting our daughter for July 4th we stayed at this lovely efficiency cottage right on the marsh in downtown St. Mary's. The cottage is well appointed and very comfortable with beautiful decor. Our host, Don, stepped over our first evening there to welcome us while we were enjoying a glass of wine on the cottage porch overlooking the marsh and his historic home. He could not have been nicer. While all of downtown St. Mary's was just 2 blocks away, we felt like we were at our own little retreat. We certainly plan to stay there again on future visits.

Adorable Cottage, Great Location

We loved our stay at the Cottage! It was super cute and cozy. The cottage is a bit closer to the main house than I expected, but we still felt like we had plenty of privacy for our anniversary trip. The location is just a short walk into town and to the Cumberland Island Ferry. St. Mary's is a lovely town with good restaurants and art galleries. We had a great time!

Best VRBO ever!

We stayed in the cottage and we couldn’t have been happier. Private and quiet, the bed was so comfortable, furnished with beautiful, cozy and comfortable furniture. Don , the owner , was very accommodating and friendly. We will be back!!

Nostalgia

The Commissary Cottage is a very special place. The property is beautiful. Time immediately slows down and there is a sense of nostalgia as you roam the property and take in the incredible views. The cottage is cozy and has all the modern conveniences. Windows, Views...Oh My! Sitting in the Rocking Chair on the deck with the incredible breeze was a favorite. The location is perfect. Great for morning walks through historic St. Marys and 1 block from the waterfront and the Cumberland Island Ferry. The Host, Don, was also exceptional. He greeted me on arrival and gave me a tour of the property. He even offered to show me around Downtown St. Marys in his golf cart. Don is very friendly but gives plenty of privacy. The perfect Host. This is an incredible location and I look forward to the opportunity to visit again.

Fantastic!

Our days in the Commissary Cottage were entirely perfect. The cottage is beautifully located and nicely furnished. We enjoyed many walks into St Mary's village, literally 1 block away. Don's care and hospitality was great. Tho the cottage in part of the main house property, privacy was never an issue. Totally enjoyable -- don't hesitate!!

Property and Location was Great

Wen enjoyed out stay the property had great vies and was great for the Two of us and our One year old golden retriever. A lot of wildlife to keep the dog always on high alert. We were able to walk to the town center and waterfront. Don the property manager was helpful and was willing to give history of the property.

Commissary Cottage

Beautiful place filled with antiques and all the supplies for cooking. The area is fantastic with not more than an hour drive from all the barrier islands and the Okeefenokee Swamp and Wildlife preserve.. Cumberland island visit is a must! Cottage is set on the marsh and walking distance to town and restaurants. We had a great vacation!

St. Marys' Best

This cottage is well equipped, much more tastefully furnished and decorated than most rentals, quiet, & very well located; the grounds of the property are lovely and well maintained. For a couple, the cottage is clearly the best place to stay in St. Marys or the surrounding area.

Our stay was wonderful. The property is set off the road and overlooks the marshes. The sunrises were indescribably beautiful and the landscaping around the property was impeccable. Our studio was very comfortable. It is on a shared property, but we never felt we lacked privacy. The way the cottage sits all windows face an open view.Our host, Don, was gracious and hospitable. Melody and Jaune who caretake and manage the rental checked to see we were enjoying ourselves but we were allowed plenty of space and solitude.I would recommend this property to any family and friends that may visit St. Mary’s. The town was pleasant to walk with our dogs, the streets shaded by huge oaks and lined by pretty houses.There are several restaurants in town within walking distance but we made use of our fully equipped kitchen almost exclusively. Overall we had an excellent time.We hope to visit again!

Nice but no privacy

This is a pretty place, but there is no privacy! The cottage is nice but full of knickknacks. There is very little available space , and the TV is small and very far away from the sofa.

First time in St Marys

We really enjoyed the property. It's a beautiful, somewhat secluded spot with a great view of the marsh and ICW. The cottage was perfect for two people and very well equipped. We met the owner when we arrived and he showed us around. He's a very personable gentleman who we enjoyed meeting. St Marys is a small town on the ICW with interesting history. Several good restaurants and shops. Its not very commercialized which makes it more appealing to us. The boat parade Saturday night was enjoyable as was the tree lighting in the park. We plan to go back when we can stay longer and take the ferry to Cumberland Island. Can't think of anything we didn't like about the cottage or the property in general. We also drove to Amelia Island (30 minutes) to the Charles Dickens Christmas deal. It was great and we'll go back to that.

Perfect Cozy Getaway

This cottage was perfect for my stay. It was cozy, secluded, but walking distance from downtown. I woke up to an uninterrupted sunrise view of the marsh and intercoastal. At night, you can marvel at the lights over at Fernandina across the river. The process to check in and check out was super easy. The place is tidy and just outright comfortable. The bed was super comfortable and much needed after each day of exploring downtown and traveling for work. The caretakers were awesome and the folks that stayed in the main house were also super pleasant. Loved it here. Hated having to leave to go back to work!

Great location for Cumberland Island!

Cozy and comfortable cottage! We had everything we needed for a wonderful vacation. The cottage was within walking distance to the Cumberland Island ferry and local restaurants. Thanks for your hospitality and the delicious muffins that were waiting for us when we arrived. Everything was perfect!!

St. Mary’s - pretty little town!

Wife and I stayed at Don’s place the commissary 7/22-26. Beautiful little cottage facing the Georgia marshes and right across from Cumberland island. Really enjoyed our time getting to know this corner of Georgia better with its history and charm and loved the quiet surroundings as well. Highly recommended and hope to get back soon!

Very Relaxing

This was our first trip to St Mary’s, and we were not disappointed at all. Sitting on the porch was so peaceful & relaxing. The Cottage is very clean, and the kitchen is well stocked with anything you should need. It was a pleasure meeting Donald, and we enjoyed the blueberry muffins. Staying at the Commissary Cottage was a great decision, and we look forward to our next visit.
