Hotel is in need of a lot of updating. Windows did not open and close properly,carpets were loose,ruffled and dangerous and general decor was tired. Lift was scary. However, staff were very helpful,kind and interested. It is a shame to have so much space unused--restaurant and large event room.

I paid a 2-star price and that’s what I got. There are narrow stairs everywhere and no one to help getting luggage up them. The room was good sized. The staff were pleasant. The breakfast was basic with both hash brown potato patties and the sausage having crusty exteriors with insides the texture of mashed potatoes. Quite unappetizing. When we went out to get dinner there was a group of loud, uninhibited, clearly “under the influence” individuals on the sidewalk just outside the hotel. The beds were comfortable. The bathroom was better than I have come to expect in budget English hotels.

The star hotel is an historical property right on a main street in Southampton. The staff members were very helpful and we enjoyed our stay!

Noisy but it is in the town centre so what do you expect?? Completely satisfactory for the price paid, even better than I expected. A fan during a jot spell might be nice.

I just needed a place to stay that was close to Planet Sounds and The Orange rooms. So I wasn't too fussy about luxury. The single room was basic, but had everything necessary. It was also perfect for the walking distances. The staff were very friendly.

Our room was good nice and clean Bed was comfortable.Bathroom nice and clean.Great for one night before our cruise. Right next to wetherspoons . It is an old hotel and needs an update.We just managed to park in the hotel car park which is quite small .

The parking bays in the hotel parking area are very tight and the bed we slept in was rather “tired”; both bed and mattress need replacement. But the staff were excellent, the hotel is centrally situated in walking distance of most city centre attractions such as the SeaCity Museum and Art Gallery. We’ll be happy to stay there again. Overall, good value for the money.

Room was clean but tired, needs repainting etc. We were in room 15 which faces a multi storey car park which was brightly lit, curtains not adequate to block out this. Staff friendly and helpful.

There was a homeliness about The Star Hotel. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We settled in for our stay very quickly and because of its central location and warmth of the staff we were able to relax very quickly.

Convenient location for the port of Southampton, staff were friendly and helpful and a good breakfast. Area around hotel a bit run down and hotel itself could do with a bit of a refresh but overall a comfortable stay for a reasonable price.

Really nice hotel, shame about the area being quite rough and noisy at night. Really good breakfast which is good value for money. Will stay again, just not be going out after dark!

Average hotel poor guest care
Let's start with the good: Good location Rooms better than expected (although towel rail was hanging off). Felt very clean Now the bad: We got a call at around 1pm on the day of the check in, telling us if we didn't pay then and there they would cancel the rooms (we had 7 rooms). Pointed out we booked on pay at hotel and we would be checking in at around 5. The man was quite aggressive and kept referring me to our agent (I'm guessing he meant hotels.com). After I promised we would be there he calmed down and agreed to keep the rooms!! The worst part for me was the shower, I had room 2, which had a walk in shower, used it in the morning and the tray got so slippy, I couldn't stay on my feet and ended up in a pile in the corner. I mentioned this on check out and suggested a slip mat was needed. The lady was concerned and said someone would call me to check I was alright. Nobody did, I actually suffered from a broken toe and a bit of bruising, but it could have been a lot worse. My summary is the hotel facilities are OK, but the care of the guests is poor and overall they are lucky to get 3 stars from me.

5 Star Star Stay
I was in Southampton for an evening meal and work related party - The Star offered best value overnight accommodation on Hotels.com, and was well placed for the venues I was visiting. Reception was excellent - car parking easy to slot into...the room, though "old" was clean and tidy, neatly decorated and comfortable. Despite being in the middle of a busy cosmopolitan city there was minimal noise during the night and I slept like a log...check out was simple - I was heading elsewhere for breakfast but walked through the restaurant and what I saw looked good so maybe next time (though to be honest if you're in Southampton and its not out of the way Halladays will always be the place to go to start the day!)

SOUTHAMPTON SHORT VISIT.
The hotel has obviously been a gem in the past but may be showing a few signs of its age. The first night was disturbed buy the fire alarm going off (very loud) about 6am due to some clown smoking in his room. The breakfast was good and was served by two lovely ladies who were very helpful.

Value for money
We booked based on location and just needed somewhere cheap and cheerful to stay after a night out in Southampton. We weren’t expecting anything amazing but were actually pleasantly surprised and would stay again as it was good value for money. The place could do with updating and modernising but our room was spacious (we only booked a small double) and clean, the staff were friendly and helpful and breakfast was good. It was also nicely decorated for xmas. It’s a quirky 18th century building with lots of history to it so floors are a bit creaky and wonky and we did suffer with lots of noise from the street as the very old sash windows didn’t really close properly and could do with being refurbed! But for the price and the central location with parking it was worth it.

Star Hotel
We booked two rooms. One was perfect but the second was extremely tired and the bathroom was not fit for purpose. The water pressure in the shower was a trickle and there was no plug in the bathroom basin so you could not have a wash. The bathroom window was clear glass with a sheer netting curtain so with the bathroom light on you could easily see in. The staff were however very helpful but I would not stay again - it needs a total overhaul
