The Space:

Monkey Manor is a revitalized 1936 home on 0.61 fully fenced acres in Movie Colony East, wrapped in mature tropical gardens, lawns and winding paths. Inside, magenta-painted beams cross the vaulted great room, large windows pull in the light and a floor-to-ceiling native stone fireplace anchors it all, with subtle Southeast Asian design throughout. Outside, palms and agave frame a saltwater pool, a hot tub, a sauna, a lantern-lit pergola, a fire pit and a rooftop deck facing the San Jacinto Mountains. Three bedrooms in the main house and an attached casita with its own kitchen sleep up to eight across four bathrooms. Draw the stone Bali bathtub and let the garden do the talking.

-Outdoor Amenities-

Start the day with a swim around the 'M' in the saltwater pool, then claim a lounger under the palms and a red umbrella. The pool faces the San Jacinto Mountains to the west, so the afternoon light keeps getting better. Duck into the sauna, tucked among the trees, then cool off in the in-ground hot tub or wander the garden paths past agave, palms and the lawn.

When dinner calls, fire up the gas BBQ and gather at the long table beneath the pergola, where Moroccan lanterns hang over patterned tile and teal sofas wait for the after-dinner conversation. Later, the gas fire pit glows in the garden. For the best seat at sunset, climb the spiral staircase to the rooftop deck, settle in at the bistro table and watch the mountains go pink. Lawn games are on hand for slow afternoons.



-Living Area-

The great room is the social heart of the house. Vaulted ceilings with magenta beams and a wrought iron chandelier rise above a leather sofa, and the dual-sided gas fireplace in native stone glows for both the living room and the patio. Put the game or a movie on the 85-inch smart TV, or pull out a board game. The three main house bedrooms and the casita living room each have a TV of their own.



-Kitchen and Dining-

White cabinets, stone counters and stainless steel appliances give the cook plenty of room, with a Keurig and a drip coffee maker, plus pods, beans and sugar, ready for the first cup. Pull up a stool at the breakfast bar, then move to the table for eight. Come evening, the carved wood cocktail bar looks out over the pool, so whoever is mixing drinks never misses a moment. Two more dining areas wait outside, under the pergola and on the front patio.



-Bedrooms and Bathrooms-

Three bedrooms are in the main house, each with vaulted ceilings, large windows and blackout curtains. Bedroom 1 pairs a king bed and a blue velvet chair with an ensuite bathroom and doors out to the garden. Bedroom 2 has a king bed, an ensuite bathroom and warm orange curtains. Bedroom 3 has two queen beds for friends or kids. All four bathrooms have walk-in showers, and the main bathroom adds the freestanding stone Bali bathtub beside a carved double vanity with stone vessel sinks.



-The Casita-

The attached casita has its own private entrance, a short walk through the backyard from the main house's back sliders. Inside are Bedroom 4 with a king bed in a wood frame, a full bathroom, a second living room with a TV, a separate kitchen and a desk, with ductless mini-splits for heating and cooling. It gives couples or extended family a place of their own, with everyone else just across the garden.



-Surrounding Area-

Palm Springs is known for its midcentury architecture, arts scene and relaxed resort atmosphere. Palm Canyon Drive is close by for boutique shopping, galleries, cocktail bars and restaurants, and so is the Palm Springs Art Museum. Ride the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway into the San Jacinto Mountains for hiking and views over the Coachella Valley, or spend a morning on the Indian Canyons trails, then come home to the pool before the sun drops behind the mountains.
