In Buenos Aires, you can meet a stranger one day and be invited to their home for a brilliant barbecue the next. It’s this sort of explicit friendliness that defines a porteño — a person native to this port city. Tolerant, cosmopolitan and safe, Buenos Aires is considered a cultural magnet in Latin America, where people from all walks of life feel welcome and the streets buzz with a blend of languages. Take in some futbol (soccer), try your hand at the tango or dig into the best grilled meats on the planet, for less than 10 bucks. It’s all possible in this city on the water.
Welcome to Recoleta & Barrio Norte It's easy to see how Buenos Aires could be called the Paris of the South in this grand neighborhood. Recoleta is where the rich live in luxury apartments and mansions while spending their free time sipping coffee at elegant cafes and shopping in expensive boutiques. Full of lush parks, grand monuments, art galleries, French architecture and wide avenues, Recoleta is also famous for its cemetery.
Food Scene BA's food scene is increasingly dynamic, but for many travelers it's the city's carnivorous pleasures that shine. Satisfying a craving for juicy steaks isn't hard to do in the land that has perfected grilling wonderfully flavorful sides of beef, washed down with a generous glass of malbec or bonarda. Parrillas (steakhouses) sit on practically every corner and will offer up myriad cuts, from bife de chorizo (sirloin) to vacio (flank steak) to ojo de bife (rib eye). But leave room for ice cream, if you can – a late-night cone of dulce de leche (caramel) helado can't be topped.
Art & Architecture Look closely: this city is beautiful. Sure, it might look like a concrete jungle from certain angles, but stroll through the streets, paying attention to the magnificent architecture around you, and you'll soon be won over. Grand French- and Italian-style palaces grab the limelight, but you'll see interesting architectural details in the buildings of even low-key, local barrios. These days the beauty of these traditional neighborhoods is further enhanced by colorful murals painted by artists involved in the city's vibrant street-art scene. For these talented individuals, the city is their canvas.
Nightlife Take a disco nap, down some coffee and be prepared to stay up all night – this city doesn't sleep. Restaurants get going at 9pm, bars at midnight and clubs at 2am at the earliest; serious clubbers don't show up until 4am. And it's not just the young folk who head out on the town in this city; BA's diverse range of bars, clubs and live-music venues offers something for everyone, from DJs spinning electronica to live jazz sets. Just remember you'll be doing it all very late.
Tango BA's famous dance is possibly the city's greatest contribution to the outside world, a steamy strut that's been described as 'making love in the vertical position'. Folklore says it began in the bordellos of long-ago Buenos Aires, when men waiting for their 'ladies' passed time by dancing among themselves. Today, glamorized tango shows are supremely entertaining with their grand feats of athleticism. You'll also find endless venues for perfecting your moves, from milongas (dance salons) to dance schools. Be aware that some people become addicted – and can spend a lifetime perfecting this sensual dance.
Getting Around
TAXI The city's numerous (about 40,000) and relatively inexpensive taxis are conspicuous by their black-and-yellow paint jobs. They click every 200m (or every minute of waiting time) and cost 20% more after 6pm. Make sure that the meter’s set to the current price when you start your ride. Drivers do not expect a big tip, but it’s customary to let them keep small change. Taxis looking for passengers will have a red light lit on the upper right corner of their windshield.
Most cab drivers are honest workers making a living, but there are a few bad apples in the bunch. Try to have an idea of where you’re going or you might be taking the ‘scenic’ route (though also be aware there are many one-way streets in BA, and your route to one place may be quite different on the way back).
Finally, make an attempt to snag an ‘official’ taxi. These are usually marked by a roof light and license number printed on the doors; the words radio taxi are usually a good sign. Official drivers must display their license on the back of their seat or dashboard.
Many locals will recommend you call a remise instead of hailing cabs off the street, and we agree. Alternative you can use Uber, even if there are not to many available. We suggest you to schedule your Uber ride with enough time ahead. A remise looks like a regular car and doesn’t have a meter. It costs a bit more than a street taxi but is considered more secure, since an established company sends them out. Most hotels and restaurants will call a remise for you; expect a short wait for them to show up.
LOCAL TRANSPORT SUBE Card To use BA's public-transportation system, you'll need a SUBE card; it's no longer possible to pay for buses with cash. Purchase one at any of the city tourist information booths, some kioskos and Correo Argentino or OCA post offices around the city; check the website for locations or look for the SUBE logo at businesses. Ezeiza airport and Retiro bus station also have SUBE booths where you can purchase and recharge cards. To purchase a SUBE card, you’ll need your passport or a copy of it. Charging the card itself is easy, and can be done at many kiosks or Subte stations. Subte (Underground) BA’s Subte opened in 1913 and is the quickest way to get around the city, though it can get mighty hot and crowded during rush hour (from 8am to 10am and 6pm to 8pm). It consists of líneas (lines) A, B, C, D, E and H. Four parallel lines run from downtown to the capital’s western outskirts, while Línea C runs north–south and connects the two major train stations of Retiro and Constitución. Línea H runs from Las Heras south to Hospitales, with plans to expand it.
To use the Subte you'll need a SUBE card. The best place to get one of these cards is at any of the city tourist booths; bring your passport. Each journey costs AR$7.50.
Trains operate from 5am to around 8:30pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to around 8pm on Sundays and holidays.
