The home's exterior was weather beaten, paint peeling everywhere, a rougher cut than expected from online images. A warning from owner would have prepared us (winter weather damage? repainting soon?) but curb appeal was downright scary. It didn’t help that our communication w/owner was somewhat halting. Ex: after carefully reading entry instructions, we downloaded a 150 Mb app called August providing us w/ house access via an electronically-activated lock. After 15 minutes waiting in the driveway for app to load, & spending another 10 minutes registering, we discovered an email from host indicating that door was unlocked w/keys on the table. Owner annoyed we missed an update while traveling w/spotty internet.
Home spacious, bedrooms w/AC & clean, exception was bathroom where black hair from previous guest was left sticking to the plastic insert shower. This is a very basic VRBO, big kitchen & living room, plenty of coffee makers, large & uncomfortable couch where guests either sink low or hit the wooden frame when leaning back. Most VRBO owners welcome you w/a note or some indication that they're in the hospitality business. In contrast, we were greeted w/handwritten warning signs (w/lots of !!!) w/out simple directions on how using an unfamiliar stove. House furnished w/scattered & drab remains of other homes. We have stayed at VRBOs for years & this isn't the quality we have come to expect. Perhaps good for families who need space w/large TV while visiting Waterville.
