Through our own fault we got lost and by pure luck the person we asked directions worked at the house. He led the way on his cycle and upon arrival was told the major wasn't in. Had we not found this young man there would have been no one there to greet us. Most of the drawers and cupboards in the room were full of personal belongings to, one would assume, a family member. we felt like we were invading someone's privacy. The room was cold as the heating only came on for a short while and went off about 9pm. The major promised us an electric fire which never materialised. There was also no lead with our kettle, again we were promised one, which only arrived after the second asking. Underneath the broken toilet seat was extremely dirty. Cleanliness is not his forte. On the plus side, the water was piping hot and he had two lovely dogs. Breakfast! We were not asked what we would like to eat. His choice of food was just left in an echo hostess trolley and was not very hot. Having said that it was nicely cooked. He has a lot to learn. We think he treated guests like his suborninates and not as paying customers. We sat in the beautiful drawing room on the saturday night frozen. I found an electric heater and when I picked it up to position in the room, the leg fell off. There was a large open fireplace crying out to have a cosy fire lit in it. But alas no. We retired early. Overall, we were not impressed and considering what we paid for mediocre accommodation and service, feel very let down. Had I not paid in advance, we would have definitely left on the Saturday.
