Shikumen houses originated in China in the mid 1800?s, and featured large stone gateways opening onto enclosed courtyards, and a mixture of Eastern and Western architecture. With the advancing pace of development, Shikumen are fast disappearing in mainland China, and are the inspiration behind the Bali Ginger Villa & Suite.

The antique houses used in the Bali Ginger Villa & Suite were originally from Java, which has a significant Chinese population, and the original structure, comprising a traditional Chinese square arch, is constructed from century old teak wood. The distinctive design for the Shikumen features the use of large gateways and shaded courtyards, and the interior design incorporates rich reds, crisp whites and natural wood, as well as artifacts from the Indonesian archipelago. The lighting has been built into colourful traditional bird cages hung from bamboo racks, creating a gentle ambience. All these elements are skilfully blended with modern conveniences and contemporary aesthetics to create a comfortable and elegant environment.
