Yorkshire Dales Stone Cottage. Wonderful Location for Walking in Swaledale
Nigel and Paula welcome you to Corner House in Grinton! The cottage was our winter home for over 20 years, and our only UK base when not in Normandy managing our three holiday cottages there. We now spend most of the winter not far away in Northallerton, so Corner House is available for holiday bookings all year round. Bordering the River Swale, the village of Grinton is in Upper Swaledale in North Yorkshire. Swaledale is one of the more northerly dales that make up the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Its higher fells are truly wild, making them wonderful to explore, either by car or on foot. At the lower levels, the landscape is one of dry stone walls, stone barns and meadows, where sheep graze in the peaceful surroundings. Grinton is about 9 miles west of Richmond and 7 miles north of Leyburn. Both are market towns which have a wide range of shops, banks, restaurants and pubs. Closer still is the village of Reeth, which is just a 15-minute walk away across the fields or a 5-minute journey by car. Situated in the middle of Grinton, Corner House was once Grinton's village shop, before being used as a family home. It was built using local stone and has a stone-slab roof. The cottage is opposite the village's very popular (but quiet!) pub, The Bridge Inn. In its early days, the pub was a coaching hostelry. Today, The Bridge Inn welcomes locals and tourists alike, even those with muddy boots and four paws! Many of our guests tell us about the warm welcome offered to them, as well as the pub's good restaurant meals, quiz nights and fun events, such as musical and theme evenings. At the back of Corner House, you can hear Grinton Beck, which trickles down to meet the River Swale 200 yards away. The River Swale is perfect for riverside walks and is part of Alfred Wainwright’s 192-mile Coast to Coast path, from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire. Corner House is also opposite Grinton's beautiful parish church. Often called "the cathedral of the dale", Grinton church is dedicated to St Andrew and was, for centuries, the only church in the whole of Upper Swaledale. Fragments of the old Norman church remain, such as its font and the tower arch, which date from the late 12th century. Other parts of the building date from the late 13th or early14th century and the pulpit is Jacobean, but St Andrew's is now mainly a 15th-century rebuild. As the sole church in the upper dale, it provided the only consecrated ground for burials. From the top end of the Dale, wicker coffins were carried some 16 miles on foot along what became known as “The Corpse Way”, mostly following the course of the river. Located at intervals along the path, several long stones - traditionally called "coffin stones" - are said to be where coffins were set down while pallbearers rested. The 'Swale Trail' is also a favourite walking route, but there are plenty of choices for walks direct from the front door of the cottage. We hope that our cottage's mix of period features and modern comforts, which include unlimited data wi-fi fast fibre broadband and also wi-fi controlled electric radiators, will make your stay at Corner House both comfortable and relaxing at any time during the year. The cottage can sleep up to five in three bedrooms, with room for a travel cot in any of the rooms - and there are wonderful views from all the principal rooms. And you are welcome to bring one pet dog with you! Our normal letting pattern is from Saturday to Saturday only between the months of April and October. Our prices during this period are for the cottage per week for two people, unless otherwise stated. There is a supplement for each additional person up to the house capacity of five people plus a baby, and also a supplement for a pet dog. We accept one dog only. We accept short breaks of 3, 4 or 5 nights between November and March, and 7-night bookings only from April to October. The Notes provide a comprehensive brief on the property, and other useful information, including details of who to contact should you experience any problems during your stay. We were two couples on a hiking holiday in Swaledale. Corner House provided a great base. The house was roomy, well located and very well equipped. Communication with the owner was excellent with a quick response.

Corner House
Property very spacious clean and tidy. Loved the area and had a super week walking, visiting local towns. Bolton Castle and NT property on rainy days very worthwhile.
Felt the accommodation to be comfortable but very tired and dated in furnishings and over decorated with pictures and personal items. Tea towels need relpacing (although i always take my own) fridge freezer needs defrosting. Small niggles really. Kitchen very well equiped and it was lovely to have milk, wine and biscuits provided.

Our first stay in the Yorkshire Dales
We have just returned from our first holiday in the Yorkshire Dales staying at Corner House. We have fallen in love with the area and were very sad to leave. The cottage is comfortable and clean with everything a family could need (including wifi for teenagers that cannot survive without access to their social networks!), and is in an ideal situation for access to the Dales. It was lovely to be able to take our dog, a staffie cross, away with us and she loved all the walks we took her on. Being able to put her bed in our room at night was a relief, so many places won't allow a dog upstairs and we know that she would have been distressed and it would have resulted in many sleepless nights for all of us. Fremington Edge is a steep climb but well worth it for the views. The Bridge Inn, a short walk across the road, offers a warm welcome and very good food. Ensure you make a visit to St Andrew's Church, opposite Corner House, it's well worth a look around this lovely church. We certainly hope to return next year!

Het Corner House is een alleraardigst huis, met voldoende ruimte voor zeker 5 of 6 personen. De hond is ook welkom. Het huis is voorzien van 3 mooie slaapkamers,. Een fijne douche in een schone badkamer. Beneden een grote eetkamer en keuken. De woonkamer heeft een gezellig kolenvuur. Het huis ligt op een prachtige plek in de Dales.

Wonderful house and location
A wonderful house which is very comfortable, well equipped, spacious and in a great location. It even has a great pub directly opposite which is definitely worth visiting!!
It is a great base for exploring Swaledale and all its superb walks, scenery, cycle routes and villages. Richmond is only 15 minutes away and it is easy to reach all the other key sights and parts of the Dales.
Hosts could not have been more helpful and informative and really went out of their way to make sure it was fully Covid 19 compliant.
We would highly recommend the house and hosts to anyone visiting the area.

GREAT SITUATION NEAR PUB LUNCHES,FRONT " GARDEN "FINE IN SUN
As you know we know the area well,so had an easy week re-visiting various favourite haunts.Had lunch at Bike centre with some relations who live near Bedale.
The shower room roof beam was a bit of a pain,quite literaly,perhaps some padding could be added for future guests?

Everything we need was there!
Everything we need was there! The cottage was fantastic, everything was there. The location is perfect, lots the walks without the car! Lucky the weather was fantastic. Of course pub over the road was very good.

A lovely,comfortable and well equipped property in an excellent location.
I would definitely recommend this property to friends and family and hope to return for another visit. The house is in a beautiful location overlooking the church with a good pub just across the road. All the information given was accurate, useful and thorough. The sitting room was very comfortable and cosy, the kitchen well equipped and both bedrooms spacious and beautifully presented. It was great to have a second cloakroom next to the main bathroom and a very sunny garden at the front of the property.
Swale dale is extremely beautiful and unspoilt and we loved exploring on foot, in the car and by using the Little White Bus. The range of local walks from Grinton and Reeth were excellent and we particularly enjoyed our walk around Kisdon taking in the villages of Muker, Thwaite and Keld. We would also recommend a trip to nearby Castle Bolton.
Overall a wonderful base to explore the Yorkshire Dales and Richmond.

Holiday at Corner Cottage
The listing described the property accurately. The property was clean and well maintained and we would willingly recommend the property to a friend or relative. The gentle walk into Reeth, with its attractions, was enjoyable and gave you an appetite for the good food available at the pubs in Reeth and Grinton. All in all a good holiday!

Very comfortable and well equipped cottage
We had a lovely week in Corner House. A very warm welcome awaited us after the drive up from London. The wine was very much enjoyed. Corner House is incredibly well-equipped and had everything we needed for a very relaxing break. One of the best holiday homes we have stayed in. We had some very good meals at the friendly Bridge Inn, which is just across the road from the house. Beautiful walks in the area with lots of great Inns and pubs. The wild flowers were stunning with wild garlic abundant and therefore, used when dining in! We hope to return to Corner House for another relaxing break soon

Superb accommodation!
We couldn't have been more comfortable in this lovely cottage. It is a lovely place to spend a holiday. It was clean and very well maintained and had everything we needed. The website details gave us all the information we required. We received a warm and friendly welcome on our arrival and were lucky with the weather - blue skies for most of the week. The car wasn't needed, as we were able to walk almost every day straight from the front door. The Number 30 bus, which stops just round the corner, also proved to be useful. The meals in the Bridge Inn across the road were lovely, as were those at the Buck in Reeth. We have stayed in this area several times, but this was by far our best experience in terms of accommodation and location. It is our intention to return next year!
