"This is a great property, and I would have given it 5 stars is the valet situation wasn’t as absurd as it was. The entire front parking lot is reserved for valet only leaving only a few parking spots on the side of the hotel and street parking. During our stay, only 2 or 3 people utilized valet for their stay. Perhaps it was busier when the restaurant was open. Hotel patrons should not have to park down the street. Compass is nice, but it’s not the Ritz - it’s more like an upscale Holiday...

"the heater was very loud and made it difficult to sleep as it was in a closet in the bedroom area.
The door to the shower would not close and flooded the bathroom.
The tv in the bedroom had no sound and the ice maker did not work.
I reported all this to the front desk clerk . She was very nice , wrote it all down and pretty much explained they were aware of these issues. No compensation was offered."

"Great location, ocean was in plain view. Great balcony view. You can hear the ocean outside your room. Very beautiful outlook.
Room was fairly clean. Wi-Fi worked pretty well. Staff was nice, they just seemed a little overworked.
Overall, great experience and would go back."

"Room was the CUTEST! Bathroom was huge. One of the cleanest (like sparkling clean) places we have ever stayed. It is right on the beach with easy, easy beach access. Large beach area for hotel. Wonderful two-story, covered deck area. A two-minute walk to Swells'a brewery :). If we ever have the opportunity to return to the OBX, John Yancey is where we will stay. "

"Though the property is beautifully located and all rooms have an ocean view, many other elements were unsatisfactory.
This is off season and noone in the lobby, but check in was so slow. Hot Tub was down. Went to stay for one night only but was awakened by workers on scaffolding outside my window at 7am. Staff were not very professional and only made excuses, not accommodations, for the inconveniences. This is mid-March and temperature is 59', therefore they should be happy they have a...

"I paid almost double for a higher floor and got the 2nd floor. At 8am sharp there was construction going on right outside my balcony to repair the restaurant porch. A warning in this would have been nice. The appears to be no drainage and the parking lot sidewalk etc get swamped with the slightest of rain. Just another crappy tourist trap. "
