Afternoon cottages near Hella, Hekla & Landmannalaugar

Spacious cottage, well located in southern Iceland. The cottage is near Hekla, Landmannalaugar, Þjófafoss, Fossabrekkur, Gjáin, Hjálparfoss, Fjallabakur, and many more famous places, only 20 min drive from Hella and the highway. In the winter there is a possibility to see the famous northern lights. We're on Google Maps: Search for "Afternoon Cottages".

Cozy cottage surrounded by nice nature. You have almost everything you need in this cottage. It's just like a studio apartment. Well-equipped kitchen with a small fridge, 2 elements ceramic cooktop, microwave, toaster, coffee machine, and all the necessary kitchenware. You can use all the coffee and tea you need.

Large bed for two people, 50" TV on the wall to watch Netflix or the local TV station (RÚV). Duvets and duvet covers will be ready along with a sheet on the bed. Two cozy armchairs for chilling. The dining table can be upsized (doubled) if you have friends staying in the other houses to have a meal with you or just chat over a cup of coffee.

Private bathroom with a toilet, shower, and a lovely lighting mirror over a sink. Towels are included. Hand- and bath soap is ready to be used.

If you like being out of the way Afternoon Cottages is a great jumping off point for adventuring. It is well equipped and very clean. It has a great price point and very basic. It worked great for us because it was simply a place to cook dinner and sleep. You have access to all the necessities about 25 minutes away in Hella. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

Best. Place. Ever.

Staying here is like staying in the Icelandic Highlands, only you’re only about 15 km from Hella (grocery store, fuel, other amenities). The cottage is spotless and has everything you’ll need for a great night (or several nights)! I wish I had known about Afternoon Cottages sooner so we could have stayed longer, but I’m pretty certain we’ll be back!

One Night Stay

We really enjoyed our night at the cottage. It was very comfortable and bigger than some of the hotel rooms we have stayed in. The Wi-Fi in the cabin was fast, so we enjoyed watching Netflix in the evening after a long day exploring. The kitchen was well equipped if we wanted to make anything to eat or drink, but one thing to note is while there was coffee to make, there was no sugar/creamer (so make sure you grab some in Hella if you need it). There was a guide book in the cottage which had recommendations on sights to see, which was great. We incorporated some of them into our trip and they were cool to see. While there were three cottages in a row, we were in number three on the end and felt we had plenty of privacy. Overall, we would stay at the cottages again.

Unglaublich hübsches Cottage mitten im Nichts. Gerade richtig, um die Ruhe zu genießen und (in unserem Fall) zu zweit zu entspannen. Hervorragend ausgestattet. Unkompliziertes Self Check-In. Wir haben es geliebt.

Iceland Adventure

This cottage near Hella was a very pretty place to stay while exploring Landmannlauger and parts of the Golden Circle. The views from Cottage #3 were great and the location of this cottage made it feel very private.

nice and pleasant

It was a very nice stay at afternoon cottages. The cottage was well equipped and practical. The view was nice but we recommend to ask for nr. 5 or nr 3. Both have view without another cottage in sight. This values the view even more...really feel of landscape. Communication with Elvar was excellent and he was very helpful.

A True Gem Away from it All

Afternoon Cottages was a delightful find. The property is new and, as such, I entered into the reservation wondering if the property would live up to its billing. It most certainly did! There are three separate cottages on the property - close to each other but sufficiently set up to allow for privacy. Cottage 3, in which I stayed, looks down the embankment toward the river with mountain views to the east. The cottage is well-appointed and has lovely finishing touches for a "tiny living" space. Overall, the cottage was bright and airy. It comes with a small refrigerator, a two burner stove, microwave, coffee maker, and tea kettle. The kitchen is stocked nicely allowing for cooking - not gourmet meals for sure - of simple breakfasts and easy dinners. The cottage has a TV with access to Netflix and comes wifi enabled. Keep in mind that you are a good 20-30 minutes drive from any town of any size...and there is wifi! (That's Iceland for you). The bed is comfy. The bathroom is generously sized for a small living space and comes stocked with shower gel/shampoo and wash clothes (wash clothes being a rare find in my three trips to Iceland). There is a small deck that surrounds two sides of the cottage. As mentioned, the cottage is a distance from any town so one should be prepared with groceries which can be bought easily up on the Ring Road whether coming from the east or west. Reaching the cottages requires driving paved and improved gravel roads. A regular car can make the trip easily in the summer; not sure what winter travel would be like down the roads. If you are looking for seclusion, outside of the other cottages next to you, you shall have it. Elvar, the owner, is responsive and was open to my suggestions on how to take the cottage from a 5 star to a 6 star. I absolutely loved staying in this little space and would return in a heart beat.
