At Ease: intimate lakefront cabin on Wisconsin's South Shore
- At Ease is a word that comes easy here. This tiny log cabin is perched directly on Lake Superior's rocky South Shore — just a short staircase from your own private stretch of shoreline. Made for two, it's packed with personality: a Jøtul gas fireplace, nautical-flag décor honoring the owner's Navy roots, a private queen bedroom, a screened porch strung with Edison lights, and a lakeside log swing made for watching waves. Dog-friendly. Peace guaranteed.
We're Bark Point Ventures — a local team that lives and works right here on Wisconsin's Lake Superior South Shore. At Ease is one of our most beloved little cabins, and we want your stay to feel just as special as the place itself. We keep things low-key and contactless, but we're always a quick message or call away if you need anything. The moment you book, you'll get a link to our digital guidebook with all the cabin's details and our best local picks — and a printed guidebook will be waiting for you at the cabin too.
At Ease sits right on the Lake Superior South Shore in Port Wing, in the heart of one of Wisconsin's quietest and most beautiful corners — Bayfield County's South Shore, where the roads are empty, the skies are dark, and the lake is always in reach.
Port Wing is a small, unhurried South Shore community with that genuinely end-of-the-road quality that makes this stretch of Wisconsin so special. Head east on Highway 13 and you'll pass through Herbster — worth a stop at Wags & Wine, our own dog-friendly wine shop, for a local pour and a browse. A bit further east, Cornucopia ("Corny" to the locals) is Wisconsin's northernmost village, with a harbor beach, a marina, galleries, and perfect sunsets over the water. Beyond that, Meyers Beach is the launch point for the legendary Lake Superior sea caves at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore — paddle to them by kayak in summer, or walk out across the ice to explore them in a hard winter freeze. Agate beaches, Lost Creek Falls, great fishing, and miles of hiking and paddling trails are all within easy reach.
Continue east on Highway 13 and you'll arrive at the postcard town of Bayfield — gateway to the Apostle Islands ferry, apple orchards, and a full calendar of festivals — in about 30–40 minutes.
Spring and fall bring warblers, wildflowers, and some of the most brilliant autumn color in the Great Lakes. Winter turns the South Shore genuinely solitary — snowshoeing, frozen sea caves, and a real chance of watching the Northern Lights from your own shoreline. It's rural, it's real, and it's gloriously unhurried.
You'll have the entire cabin and its grounds to yourself — the living room, loft bedroom, screened porch, deck, fire pit, lakeside swing, and your private staircase down to the Lake Superior shoreline. Check-in is contactless, via a keypad lock, available any time. Free parking on site.
Some places are large and loud. At Ease is the other kind.
This tiny lakefront log cabin is built for exactly two people and exactly one purpose: to let you exhale. It sits perched above Lake Superior's rocky South Shore, hidden in a dense pocket of birch and pine — and from the moment you step inside, the whole place is telling you the same thing: at ease.
The name. Look up when you walk in. Strung across the warm honey-pine walls is a run of red, white, and blue nautical signal flags — semaphore spelling out A-T E-A-S-E, letter by letter. It's a nod to the owner's Navy roots, and the cabin's quiet personality in a single decorative detail.
The living room. An open A-frame great room with soaring pine ceilings, a leather sofa, a carved green vintage armchair, a blue floral upholstered side chair, and a colorful braided rug anchoring the space. The centerpiece is a Jøtul matte-black gas fireplace — a beautiful Norwegian cast-iron stove that turns on without fuss and fills the room with warmth in minutes. No wood-hauling, no kindling, no waiting: just instant, effortless fire. A Lake Superior map print and the semaphore flags make the walls feel personal rather than generic.
The kitchen. Navy blue cabinetry with butcher block countertops, a gas range and oven, full-size stainless refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and open shelving with dishes. A two-person dining table with modern chairs sits right off the kitchen — intimate by design, perfect for a candlelit dinner with the fireplace going two feet away.
The bedroom. The queen bedroom is tucked into its own private space in the cabin's addition — a proper room apart from the open living area, with a comfortable queen bed and that same warm pine character carried throughout. Quiet, private, and cozy.
The loft. Up the ship's ladder and into the rafters: a bonus hangout nook under the A-frame pine ceiling with modular seating, a TV, and board games. A perfect slow-morning spot — coffee, a board game, the sound of the lake outside.
The bathroom. A beautifully finished bath with a navy blue vanity, marble-look countertop, modern brushed-nickel fixtures, pine shiplap walls, a walk-in shower, and a built-in bench and pine-paneled walls. Well appointed for such a compact cabin — it doesn't feel like an afterthought.
The screened porch. Attached directly to the cabin, this is At Ease's secret weapon: a fully furnished screened room with Edison string lights overhead, a comfy sectional, a colorful floral rug, and a black bistro table with chairs. It's a whole extra living room — bug-free and open to the sounds of the lake and forest. Morning coffee, evening wine, afternoon nap — it earns every kind of use.
The deck. A wood deck connects the cabin to the screened porch, where you can dine on the outdoor dining set or enjoy the pair of Adirondack chairs overlooking the lake.
The lakeside swing. Follow the gravel path toward the water and you'll find a sturdy log-and-timber swing, positioned on a pad edged with smooth South Shore stones, facing Lake Superior through the trees. It's the kind of thing you sit down in for a few minutes and stay for an hour.
Steps to the water. A short wooden staircase leads directly from the cabin down to At Ease's private stretch of Lake Superior shoreline — rounded agate stones, driftwood, and the sound of cold fresh water on rock. Morning coffee here has no equal.
The fire pit. A fire pit near the water's edge, ready for evenings under dark South Shore skies.
Dog-friendly. Leashed dogs are welcome at At Ease — there's good sniffing to be done, and the rocky shoreline is endlessly interesting to a curious nose.
A car is the way to go — the South Shore is best explored at your own pace, and everything is close. From At Ease, Port Wing is just minutes away, Herbster is about 10 minutes away, Cornucopia roughly 20 minutes, the Meyers Beach sea caves about 30 minutes, and Bayfield around 40 minutes. Duluth/Superior and the regional airport are approximately 1 hour to the west.
Sleeps 2 — 1 queen bed in the bedroom. This cabin is made for two; it is not set up for additional guests.
Loft lounge — the bonus hangout nook above the living room is reached by a ship's-style ladder; note that this is a fun extra space, not where guests sleep.
Dogs welcome — leashed dogs are welcome at At Ease.
Jøtul gas fireplace — no wood-hauling, no fuss; easy to operate.
Screened porch — a fully furnished second living space; one of the cabin's best features, especially in summer and early fall.
Private shoreline access — a short wooden staircase leads directly to your own stretch of rocky Lake Superior shoreline. The water is cold and wild; please keep an eye on children and dogs near the shore.
WiFi — we have amazingly zippy fiber Internet up here!
No air conditioning — the cabin is cooled by the natural cool of the Northwoods and Lake Superior air. The lake's influence keeps this stretch of the South Shore genuinely mild in summer.
House rules & check-out instructions in both the digital guidebook link and the printed in-cabin guidebook.
