Great spot to visit the area

Sanctuary Hideaway
A beautiful property in a quiet lovely hillside neighborhood. We were surrounded by mature trees and vibrant spring blooms. The property was built in a very thoughtful and artful way that made the experience extra special. It truly was a little piece of heaven. We hope to come back someday.

Woodsy getaway near the city
We loved our stay at Ted's guest house! I traveled with my 79-yr-old mother and my small dog, and it was a bit snug for us but perfectly fine for 3 nights. The scenery and the casita itself are beautiful! Ted does a great job of communicating quickly, making himself available for any questions or needs, and making the home feel cozy and welcoming. The roads getting to the home were a bit tougher to navigate than expected, but we were able to park directly across from our gate. My mother has a tough time walking uneven surfaces, so the slant on the road and on the patio was a bit tricky for her, but parking close by made it easier. The entry and the entire home was very private, with a completely separate entrance at street level! The neighborhood is beautiful, and my dog loved walking there each morning. The home has all the comforts you could want, and we loved having the toaster, tea kettle, microwave, hot plate, and mini fridge so we could have our own food with us. I would absolutely recommend Ted's listing! It is a snug studio, so I wouldn't do a stay there with large dogs or more than 2 people. Also, know that the streets are narrow and a bit steep, and the entry and patio are pretty uneven (part of the beauty, but tough for those with mobility issues). Overall, we absolutely loved our stay and look forward to going back in the future!

Review Montclair Getaway.
A very nice relaxing location. Well maintained with a pleasant decor. I highly recommended it for those who need to get away from traffic and crowds and yet close enough to enjoy some great coffee and bakery in East Berkeley.

Renewed Body and Soul
Upon my arrival, my stay was peaceful and serene. I loved the fireplace. The shower and bathroom counter was perfect, filled with plenty of towels, and the cabinet was complete with extras you might need. I was able to complete my final essay and book a summer trip. I walked the neighborhood several times and drove twice to the grocery store. Thank you for the great coffee and for checking in with me once I arrived to ensure everything was okay. I played the CDs to put me to sleep as the fireplace was on; I also took naps during the day. I think everyone should enjoy a serene day to themselves and renew their energy; this is a great sanctuary to gain personal wisdom before marriage, time alone as a mother or dad, and time to grieve a loved one. I will return again because being alone gives me time to think, be creative, and ponder my thoughts. I have come up with some amazing ideas for my future. Thank you for creating this space.

True Sanctuary

Sanctuary
Quiet and very comfortable. Loved the gas fireplace. Located one mile from restaurants, shopping and grocery store at Montclair Center. We stayed for a week and will be back whenever we visit the area. Highly recommend.

Serene property, very cozy, our host Ted made sure that we had an easy check in and checked in later to make sure we had everything we needed. The place has nice music available and minimum cooking availability.

Wonderful sanctuary
Couldn’t have asked for a more perfect place to stay to escape from the pressures of work and the every day. We had everything we needed and restaurants just a short drive away. Feel fully recharged and ready to face the world. The little touches made it the perfect sanctuary. Will be back

Wonderfully Relaxing
What a true Sanctuary. Pictures online are spot on. Ted was very welcoming and communicated with me throughout the stay in case I needed anything. Loved the cottage. Would highly recommend and will stay there again when I’m in town.

Cottage charm in the quiet Oakland hills. Four minute drive to shopping, cafes, and coffee, and easy access to highway to bring you to Walnut Creek, Berkeley, San Francisco, and beyond. Sweet secluded patio where to relax after a day of sightseeing.

Nice stay
Me and my husband spend the weekend in this beautiful cottage the property manager guided us through check in process through email and also check in with us at we were there. Beautiful sceneries a big Plus for us had to be that door dash and Uber were able to find us and we noticed we were in a very good location we were not to far from city.

Sanctuary: it really is
I live in a very noisy area of Oakland. The days leading up to July 4th every year are rough, to say the least. So I'm always looking for solace and quiet that time of year. One my dogs is the same way, so Ted allowed me to bring her with me just for a few hours for a few evenings. All she and I did was lounge, breathe, and enjoy the silence. What beauty. And the neighborhood!! Oh my, what a joy. Walking with her, I was overwhelmed with joy and surprise, which is exactly how we felt inside "the sanctuary." Thank you for feeding my soul (and my dog's soul!) for a short time, and for providing this wonderful escape from reality. I'll be back next year. With gratitude.

If you love Northern California this is such a quintessential spot. It’s perfectly Northern California. I loved it. Great name “The Sanctuary” bc it’s VERY calming and amazing neighborhood. Would totally stay here again when I’m back in town.

Interesting Place
Be ready for some very tight road conditions and parking. You will be on a basically one lane road. Cars are parked on both sides and it is tight.

Beautifully Appointed Destination
This property in the Montclair area of Oakland is absolutely lovely. We have not previously stayed in a more tastefully decorated apartment. The property is very private and cozy, made even more so by the lovely fireplace and small fenced patio. The property does not have a kitchen, but is equipped with a microwave, small refrigerator, coffee maker and outdoor grill, which served our needs well, since we were visiting family nearby, and we did not need a full kitchen. The hosts were lovely and very accommodating and provided everything that we needed. We look forward to returning to this charming property in the future.

Disappointing
Was not a good fit for me and my husband. Smaller than we expected. Hardly space to plug in coffee pot. For seniors uneven streets may make walking difficult.

I always take pains to portray the sanctuary in a fair and truthful way.The first picture presented is wide angle and I clearly state in the caption that it shows the layout well but exaggerates the size of the space .That is the only wide angle shot I use . I am also very accurate in my description of the cooking facilities . There is a hot water maker and a drip cone for making coffee. I'm assuming maybe Karen brought her own coffee pot and indeed, that might requir moveing some thing else out-of-the-way And I would've been very happy to accommodate her in that- you don't have to read too many of my reviews to see that I go out of my way for my guests. Finally Yes our streets in the Oakland hills could be better.My wife and I are both seniors - we manage fine but if you have some restrictions it may be something to consider.

Home away from home
Property was everything I expected and more. Serene location, yet only a ten minute ride to the heart of Berkeley. There are not enough accolades to describe Ted (our host) who made us feel welcome the moment we arrived and continued to check in on us throughout the stay. We look forward to a return visit.

Descriptions are 100% accurate. Hosts have done wonderful with this ‘sanctuary’ and it is a wonderful retreat. Close to the city yet removed and surrounded by nature - cozy, serene, and peaceful.

Comfy and cozy
Location is very safe and rather secluded in a hilly wooded area, the surrounding residents are very kind and friendly. The owner was very nice and responsive. The only thing lacking was the ability to access the streaming services due to the need of a code. Other than that, the place was clean and was easy to get into Oakland and Emeryville. We enjoyed our time there. Slept well.

Hillside Sanctuary
A beautiful, cozy and secluded place with a very gracious host. We spent a week there while visiting our daughter nearby, and loved the place. We were surrounded by exquisite stonework, spent the nights in a comfy bed, and enjoyed the warm fireplace. I would highly recommend! One note, though -- the streets are narrow and rough, so drive carefully.

Another Wonderful Stay
We stayed at The Sanctuary for four nights on either side of a week in Maui. After we got back from Maui, there were Hawaiian treats in our basket! So thoughtful, and typical of Ted's hospitality!

The Sanctuary is Just That
This was our third stay here, and we love it. The unit is artistically furnished, including cool stonework by the owner. The property is tucked away on a cozy street in the hills above Montclair. It has all the comforts of home, in a charming little package. The owner is very nice and puts out fresh flowers and treats for when we arrive. We'll stay here again next time we come out to California.

In the Bleak Midwinter
From the moment you step out of your vehicle you are hit with the fresh and pleasant aroma of the nature around you. It smells akin to Spring, but the nights are still too long to be in that season of the year. As you look around, you see houses stacked up on hills, reminding you of images of the terraces of Machu Picchu. It is quiet. Birds chirp and you hear a few cars in the distance, but it is peaceful. You make your way down to the vacation rental. A sign next to the gate reads "The Sanctuary". But you already feel that you found a hidden oasis... And this place truly is a hidden oasis! Yes, the roads up to it are steep and windy but that just makes the place even more enjoyable. I have nothing but good things to say about the hosts. They were very hospitable and made sure we enjoyed our stay. Ted was very responsive and easy to talk to. Also, his great craftsmanship with the detailing just brings everything together. I surprised my girlfriend with this place to stay at for our anniversary and she absolutely loved it. We both had a great time. 10/10 would stay again!

Great Stay In Montclair
After a rough start due to unforeseen circumstances the owner railed and made our stay very comfortable. The only negative is I dropped my pills all over the floor and under the bed was really dirty.

Warm and Cozy
We love this beautiful place. It made us feel cozy. We use the heater and it did made the place warm. I love the shower. I like that there was a lot of mirrors for us to use. For breakfast time, we would definitely recommend going to Crepevine restaurant since it’s 6min from the place.

The owners are present and attentive…respectful, of my presence. It’s in a wonderful location. Wonderfully comfortable bed. Quiet setting that makes you feel special. Thoughtful appointments shows that they want you too relax and enjoy what they have created. Pluses outdoor patio… great water pressure for a quick shower… added touch the owners “cd” collection. Very happy I found such an affordable place. Thanks again….
