Answers to some frequently asked questions-
*Yes, I feel safe in this area. While Mexico has gained a reputation for crime over the last several years, Merida and the Yucatan boasts being the safest area. Most crimes committed are those of opportunity, not violence. Use common sense as you would when traveling anywhere. Do not flash cash or expensive jewelry and do not leave valuables out in plain site or leave doors unlocked. As added security measures, the house is equipped with an alarm system and exterior security cameras that do not invade guests privacy.
*You will need to bring Pesos for shopping in Chuburna and Chelem. Credit Cards and American dollars are not as widely accepted as in tourist areas.
*Your Sam's and Costco membership cards from home will work in Merida.
*Do not drink the water, even to brush your teeth. Purified drinking water will be provided for you. You can make ice with the purified water or buy it in town. It is safe. You can also order drinks in town with ice and not worry. They are using purified water to make their ice. We have never had a problem.
*You do not have to speak Spanish, but knowing some basic words help. Many locals speak English, but not everyone.
*Do your homework on rental cars before you come. Many post insanely cheap prices per day online and charge you outrageous amounts for "mandatory" insurance. Check with your local insurance agent and call your credit card company to confirm exactly what coverage you may have out of the country if any, and what you will need to purchase.
*There is a bus service to and from Progreso. They run approximately every 15 minutes. There are also taxi services available.
