The Neighborhood:
Hampton need no-longer live in the shadow of its upmarket neighbour, Brighton. Located 14 kilometres south-east of Melbourne’s CBD, the little bayside suburb’s drawcards are plenty.
On one of Port Phillip’s loveliest beaches, Hampton is a popular launch pad for kiteboarders and windsurfers. Local families flock to the sand in warmer months as hundreds of children sign on for the lifesaving club’s Nippers program. Dog owners get the run of the sand, too, south of Ferdinando Gardens and along Picnic Point to Hampton Pier.
The Bayside Coastal Indigenous Trail meanders from Brighton to Beaumaris, via Hampton, and celebrates the Boon Wurrung people, Bayside council’s traditional owners, through contemporary artworks and storytelling.
Inland, stretching on either side of the train station – a 25-minute commute to the city via the Sandringham line – bustling Hampton Street marries village charm with a lively cafe, restaurant and boutique shopping scene. Thomas Street Playground, with its stunning timber castle centrepiece, draws visitors from all over Melbourne.
Hampton’s vibrant culinary scene caters to every palate, from artisanal coffee in quaint cafes to international cuisines in upscale restaurants. The Hampton Street precinct, a hub of gastronomic delights, invites locals and visitors to savour delectable dishes and indulge in diverse culinary experiences.
In the late 1800s, Melburnians travelled to Hampton to take in the sea air, with hotels, a pier and a coffee palace supporting the tourist trade. Market gardens spread over much of the postcode, before giving way to post-war housing booms – 1920s and '30s Californian bungalows are in rich supply, later joined by clinker-brick abodes. Almost all of these, and the earlier Edwardian housing stock, have been picked over for renovation and rebuilding by new generations of home owners.
Getting Around:
A notable aspect of Hampton’s charm lies in its good transportation access. The Hampton Train Station is a gateway to Melbourne’s central business district, ensuring a stress-free commute. The station is an 11 minute walk from the apartment. You can also jump in the car via Beach Road or Nepean Highway and be in the Melbourne hustle and bustle in 20-25 minutes.
