Attention to detail throughout is apparent, and the wonderful living area, with comfy leather sofas, is the ideal place to relax, put your feet up and chill out after a day’s exploring. Middleton-by-Wirksworth is a delightful village. A former quarry and lead mining village, it nestles quietly on a prominent hillside above the nearby towns of Wirksworth and Matlock as well as the village of Cromford which is a world heritage site only 5 minutes away. The village is centred on a long main street which consists of two good pubs, one with a great food menu and the other a social drinking pub, both within walking distance, before eventually winding its way down into nearby Wirksworth with a selection of shops, restaurants, heritage center and other amenities. The village was the Gold award and Village category winner for the ‘East Midlands Village in Bloom’ award in 2019, and was also nominated for the Britain in Bloom award in the same year. The surrounding countryside is a walkers’ and cyclists’ paradise, with the disused High Peak railway line running through the village, now converted into The High Peak Cycle Trail and providing a fun day out for all.

Matlock is only 10 minutes away providing a good range of shops and pubs, whilst the many National Trust properties and museums throughout the area are not to be missed. The popular spa town of Matlock is certainly worth visiting whilst you’re here; it features stunning buildings and a good selection of shops. The neighbouring Matlock Bath is 5 minutes away and is a good place to go, with The Heights of Abraham being within easy reach, providing a fantastic way to indulge in the incredible views of the area.

Why not venture a little further and visit the famous market town of Bakewell home of the world-renowned pudding just 20 minutes away. It offers a wonderful choice of shops and eateries, and a traditional market every Monday. A short drive or walk takes you to Carsington Water where there is an abundance of water sports available both through courses and hire, as well as bicycle hire and boat fishing available with a lovely 9 mile walk around. A must for anyone visiting the area is to visit Cromford, which is a key part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site and home to the world’s first successful water powered cotton spinning mill, which revolutionised the factory system, making the most of the Industrial Revolution. Also within easy reach are the majestic Chatsworth House and the much praised Haddon Hall, both well worth a visit. The Miners Rest is a delightful cottage which offers guests a real treat in a fantastic location at any time of the year. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 500 yards.

Brilliant location in Middleton but a short walk (30 mins) to both Wirksworth and Cromford, both of which are full of history and excellent for exploring on foot. Also, reasonably regular bus services to Matlock, Wirksworth, Bakewell and even Derby. The High Peak trail is a 10 minute walk away, popular with hikers and cyclists. Middleton itself has 2 pubs, both of which are worth visiting and the Rising Sun does good "pub grub".Cottage is lovely. Very compact and all on one level, apart from the sun terrace at the back which is up a few stone steps. All you could need in terms of kitchen equipment, comfortable bed, decent bath / shower, spotlessly clean and very cosy (we visited in January so the warmth after a day's walking was most welcome).Highly recommended.

We had a short break here, to escape our normal routine in life, it was a much needed break. The peaks are a magnet for cycling and walking, neither of which we can do anymore, but there was still plenty for us to do. The accommodation was situated in a quiet village but only a short drive to nearby towns and shops. You could walk to Wirksworth if you wanted and were fit. I have mobility issues so unfortunately not an option for me. This didn’t spoil our break, and it shouldn’t for others with mobility issues either. Plenty to do, nice pubs and places to eat. However, that’s the area, the accommodation is what I really want to review. Comfy, very clean, and all the facilities you need for your stay. The owners live next door but don’t, like some places we have stayed, bombard you constantly. They leave you to your stay but make it known you can contact them if you need anything. They seem a lovely couple and have thought of everything in regards to making your stay as good as possible. We couldn’t fault the apartment in any way. We will definitely stay there again if we visit the area and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone. Well worth it.
