This hotel is obviously very old and full of character. We felt it could do with some updating though, especially in the bedrooms/bathroom. Our rooma was adequate for one nights stay, we didnt get alot of sleep as it was far too hot and the noise from creaky floorboards from the room above was extremely loud also could hear toilets flushing and talking/coughing from adjacent room. The food on an evening was very nice however breakfast the next morning was a little unorganised, only one staff member who seemed to be doing everthing. Definately could have done with extra help. Overall we had an ok stay but doubt we would return.

Lovely hotel with breakfast included which was a surprise. Very welcoming owners, couldn't do enough for you. Beautiful room very cosy pub with reasonable prices

A good night
Warm welcome on a very wet and wind evening. Had a lovely meal. Staff very friendly and helpful. Due to the storm the electric went off. The staff went over and beyond to make the situation comfortable for us.

Fabulous stay!
Lovely place, very welcoming. Wonderful 3 course meal in the evening, all cooked from scratch and tasty and the breakfast was the best I’ve had in a long time. Dog friendly, he loved it. We were lucky enough to stay in a room that overlooked the centre with plenty of horses travelling through. We had a couple of walks and a visit to the Castle. Middleham is small with beautiful countryside and the local beers are well worth a try. We will be back as 10/10. Before booking we looked at previously reviews which were all very good apart from one which was low, can honestly say the review did not sound like this hotel at all. It is an older building with lots of character, is comfortable and everyone we came into contact with were friendly, helpful and welcoming.

Everything was really good. The room and bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed our breakfast and we had a good evening meal too. All the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We would love to stay again.

Lovely stay, nice evening meal
We had a lovely stay at the Richard lII. Our evening was very tasty and nicely presented as was the breakfast. The atmosphere in the evening was very cosy with candles on all the tables. Middleham is beautiful village. Woke up to the race horses trotting up the street to their gallops. Highly recommended!

Friendly and comfy
Nice hotel in the centre of Middleham. Very friendly and helpful staff. Room a little small, fine for a night though. And they had a guitar to play!

The property was close to the forbidden corner, which was the main reason for choosing this hotel. The service was fantastic and nothing was too much trouble. The only down side was the wifi, perfect downstairs but not in the room. I chose this hotel because it said there was wifi in the room. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case.. we had our evening meal at the pub which was lovely and the breakfast the next morning was also really good.

Traditional pub in centre of village, good base for discovering The Dales. Stayed in "Richard the Third" room, which was clean, with comfortable bed. Good en suite but shower attached to bath taps, so low pressure. Friendly, attentive staff, lovely relaxed atmosphere. Excellent breakfasts and meals. Would recommend.

Enjoyable stay
The bed was incredibly comfortable, the whole room and bathroom was really clean and well put together. The breakfast was lovely and staff really friendly. The only negatives were minor (what you would expect from an older building), the walls are thin and you can hear people in other rooms next to you and walking around, I woke up and could hear people walking around upstairs etc. The wifi is also not good in the rooms.

We had a lovely stay room was bit small but we was out all day good bathroom bed comfy very dog friendly as was the area with fantastic walks staff very friendly and breakfast fabulous fresh produce and fresh ground coffee we would stay again .

An absolutely charming village hotel. It seemed to be the hub for walkers who were in town. A great place to sit outside and watch all the race horses going through the village. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Great beer and wonderful grub all with a friendly atmosphere. Thoroughly enjoyed my three night stay.

good location but far too noisy at night
our room was above the bar area and facing the street so the noise from below made it impossible to sleep until the pub closed The bed was too large for the room although it was comfortable

Just lovely
This was very much a flying visit. We checked in at 5.30pm, in order to attend an event at Castle Bolton. Returned at 11.00pm and left after an early breakfast because we needed to get home. Very sorry it was so short, because the hotel is delightful and very comfortable, the staff friendly and helpful, the breakfast was delicious (proper mushrooms, not those tinned things!) and the dinner menu looked excellent. Our room was spacious and comfortable; there was a good makeup mirror in the bathroom, and everything we needed was provided, including an iron and ironing board. We shall certainly stay again, and for longer.

old world Pub, odd shaped rooms, creaky uneven floor, fiddly corridors. Room number 4, is at the back of the pub,it backs onto an alley way, the other building is about six feet from your window... which was only about two foot square. When we arrived the window was open, but the temperature in the room must have been around 30 degrees..Being in our sixties, and both have breathing issues, I thought this does not bode well. We could not sleep at all as the bed slopes back to the head board end, the pillows were wet through with sweat. There was a small fan on the window sill, I ran this on full till 3 am, then had to turn it off because of the noise.hoping to try and fall asleep.The lighting was dreadful, with all three lights on it was still to dark to read the newspaper. I mentioned all this to the young man working in the bar, told him I couldn't stop the next evening because of the room, but he still charged us.. I thought he might have discussed a part payment. I was very disappointed.. The breakfast I have to say was the best value and probably the best I have ever had. delicious.The bar is very vibrant and lively and a nice atmosphere. I dread to think what the room was like during the recent hot weather.I suspect unbearable. sorry to sound so negative, but we were really looking forward to staying.

overnight stay
We stopped here for one on our way to Northumberland. We were made to feel very welcome on arrival. The room was quiet,clean and comfortable and we had a restful night. We had dinner in the hotel which was really nice and very reasonable. The hotel is located in the middle of the village and in the morning is was a real treat to watch the race horses go through the village on the way to the gallops. There is a castle to visit and some lovely shops. We hope to return in the future and will definately book to stay here again.

Great place to stay
We had a wonderful stay at Richard III . The evening meal and breakfast was wonderful. If I had to complain about anything, it was the winter douvet in August was far to hot. I would definitely be staying here when I visit this area again.

Not child friendly
Not child friendly - tables were being booked for dinners rather than says by "sorry we are full" leaving nowhere to sit with children once your meal was finished. Children's bed was broken and unusable. Toilet light broken. Gents toilets in main bar stunk. Food was lovely, but not a place to take children to sleep in the hotel. We left at 7.45pm in disgust with kids in their pyjamas and very sad.
