Perfectly sited for dramatic views and private access from the yard to the ocean, this double A-frame home sleeps six in one of the best seaside locations in Puako. Rough-hewn vaulted ceilings with tall windows frame views of Maui, the Kohala Mountains and Puako Bay. Relax in one of several outdoor choices: a front lanai, or a wind-protected sun bathing deck. Watch your children play in the grassy yard shaded by mature trees and shrubs. The balcony, part of the separate Primary suite, offers private viewing of Hawaii’s spectacular Pacific sunsets. You’ll be within walking distance of the charming Puako General Store and handy to excursions to Waialea Bay and Hapuna Beach, often rated among the world’s best beaches.

We had an amazing stay at the Puako house! It was spotlessly clean, exactly as listed, and felt like a true home away from home. There were no surprises — everything was as described or better.The house was fully stocked with dishes, cookware, towels, bedding, and even beach toys for our kids. The shady lawn was great for relaxing, and we loved being right on the beach. The snorkeling out front was incredible — sea turtles and vibrant fish just steps from the door.The house has plenty of fans throughout, which helped keep things comfortable. That said, the only downside is that it does get hot during the day, especially in the warmer months, so be prepared for warm afternoons and evenings indoors. Thankfully for all the fans!Still, the overall experience was fantastic. The hosts were wonderful, responsive, and thoughtful. We’ve stayed at several homes during our trip, and this was by far a favorite.If you’re looking for a peaceful, clean, well-equipped oceanfront home, this is it. We hope to return again soon!

A beach house from another era, right on the beach. cool snorkeling (though sometimes lower visibility) right outside the house—almost ran into a big beautiful turtle as we came over somelava—also very close to guided trips that can take you to very beautiful and more clear spots off shore (we enjoyed our Liquid Hawaii trip). Property management firm that handles the rental is professional and helpful and gracious. The church next door is low key—even on Sunday—and the beach is too. You’ll benefit from some water shoes here and other places in this area because of lava rocks.

This trip is exactly what we needed!

We all loved this location, the home, the kitchen, the sleeping arrangements and comfort. The two decks were well used by our small but very close group. The middle deck was fantastic for evening gathering, while the back deck was great for fresh breezes and easy access to the water.

Beautiful and Relaxing Retreat

Great stay at this relaxing Puako beach house. This was the perfect getaway for a relaxing beach vacation for my small family. My husband and I stayed six nights with our ten-year old daughter. We could have easily fit another couple and child in the space. The house is older but very well-maintained and clean, providing a very authentic Hawaiian experience. Don't let the age of the house hold you back at all - the A-frame style is precious and the cool breeze in the evening is a perfect sunset setting with literally a private beach right in front of you. The house is also very well-stocked which I don't think any of the other reviews stated. Also, there was an early review of the bushes not providing privacy - I can guarantee you this is no longer a problem and the yard is carefully maintained and watered. We will definitely rent this house again on a future visit to the Big Island.

Charming and Private Beach Home

We have stayed a lot of places on the various islands, but this one is by far our new favorite! Cute and very private older beach house with an unbeatable location if you need to recharge. Property manager Robbie was great to communicate with and everything was as listed. We will definitely be back!

Great stay in Puako

Extremely cute old-school Hawaii property, and can't beat the ocean access for snorkeling and kayaking / SUP. Communication with the owners was excellent and prompt -- they seemed very organized and on top of things. Great quiet neighborhood, all you hear is the water and the ocean breezes. Lack of AC meant it was warm in the afternoons (July visit), but the house was very well ventilated and we had constant breezes moving through. We loved our stay!

Location of Dreams

If your idea of a vacay in Hawaii is luxurious digs and maid service, then this is not your place. But if the idea of an idyllic semi-private beach twelve steps from your deck is your bag, then this is definitely your place! The house is old Hawaiian funky, but crispy clean, and very practical for two couples or a family of four to six. We just stayed as a couple, and loved every moment of our stay. Truly a gem of a location, and the 2 Papayas management team are great communicators and very thoughtful. We'll definitely try to stay again next time we're on the Big Island.

Carefree Vacation

What a beautiful location and a house with ample space, privacy and character. We had a fantastic time and the team at 2 Papayas checked in regularly to make sure things were going well. From the house we watched Humpback Whales, walked tide pools, swam, snorkeled and just relaxed. The house is a bit dated but comfortable and clean. The only issue we had was with ants and can be expected from time to time on the island. The managers offered to bring out the pest guy, but ultimately we dealt with it ourselves and it was fine. Thanks for a great stay!

Hawaii Heaven

We had five adult family members and found the home perfect for our vacation. Most beautiful view of the ocean with our own little beach to launch kayaks to snorkel. Very close to some of the nicest beaches on the Big Island. The kitchen is well equipped and plenty of nice linens & towels. A great bbq on the deck overlooking the ocean. Many members of our family needed to work on their computers each day and the internet was fast & reliable. There is even an office space for use. We loved the private location and hope to return in the future.

Lovely Big Island Location

Absolutely beautiful and peaceful getaway on the Big Island with a beach and snorkeling right outside the door. We were greeted daily by sea turtles and days ended with gorgeous sunsets. Easy access to other nearby popular beaches, restaurants and shopping. Management was superb and responsive. Highly recommend.

This beachside rustic cutie held up to Hurricane Lane's winds. Perfect location for this great home.

I love this rustic gem. Located behind the Church of Christ, you could not ask for a more private, quiet beachfront home. We snorkeled most days further down Puako, as the harbor was always churned up, but you're 2 minutes away from a 20+ turtle sunset, eagle rays, turtle cleaning stations, white mouthed morays and more. The home itself is very traditional. Not for the high end lovers (or those who must have AC). The a-frame structures kept the winds flowing throughout. There's plenty of room for 6 people to sleep comfortably. The kitchen is basic but functional. The walls have treasures from the sea and lots of books to read. But you're here for the view and your own little beach attached to an even larger one that curves around for the most beautiful sunset view on the island. Mary, the property manager and Robbie from 2 Papayas were wonderful. We were here during Hurricane Lane and they called almost every day to check in on us. Hurricane force winds hit us one night, and this house was steadfast against the 50+ mph winds. But what's amazing about Hawaii is all you have to be is patient and the sun will always come out again. Oh, the view of the stars from the master bed had me up at 3:30 almost every night. Unbelievable!! Would stay here again in a heartbeat. Mahalo, 2A! - ME & Steve

Amazing location!

This property is all about location, location, location. It is ideally situated for Ironman Hawaii 70.3 race participants. We LOVED the views and easy access to the bay. The home itself is rustic but well appointed. It is situated on a pointe, so there is a breeze that generally makes it comfortable with no AC. During our stay, the mouse bloom was a problem we had to deal with daily. If you are ok with a little bit of "island living", then the tradeoff for the location is worth it.

A piece of paradise. Fantastic destination for kids.

This was our first trip to Hawai'i and we feel very lucky to have found Hale Puako. We spent two fantastic weeks in this rental. The house was very clean and it had everything we needed to have a restful vacation. The kitchen was well stocked and we found all needed to cook meals. Having a grill on the deck made it easier to cook and enjoy meals outdoors. The closeness to the sea allows for the house to benefit from the ocean breeze, specially the attached master bedroom, and we could sleep well without AC. The location of the rental couldn't be better: right on a small cove with a sandy entry which made it very inviting for the kids (8 and 10) to snorkel and play by their own while parents either joined them or enjoy the sights from the deck. The place is very private and we felt we were the only people around. with the sea on one side and a very spacious green yard around, the house feels very private. The natural beauty of Puako Bay made this an excellent destination in itself: snorkeling in the bay is great and kid friendly, the turtles were frequent swimming partners and some came to have their 'siestas' right on the cove (the back yard of the house, incredible!). We explored different sections of it (the cove to the left of the boat ramp is like an aquarium). Hapuna beach, two miles away, is simply beautiful. If you are into running, you can run there early in the morning, go for a swim and run back to the house. It was heaven. You can explore the entire bay in low tide and have fun checking all the ponds. Sunsets are spectacular. Groceries are near by and you have options to chose from. Management was very professional and responsive to our needs and we were very satisfied with 2Papayas. We highly recommend this rental to other families.
