Nini's Maison - Terrace Living Above Kalamata City

Nini's Maison is a two level maisonette on the top floors of a building in central Kalamata, about 2.5 km from the city beach. Wide terraces look out over the rooftops to the mountains, while the bedrooms open straight onto them. Inside, warm wood floors, full bookshelves and a formal dining room give the home real character, whether you come for summer swims or winter walks in the old town. A supermarket, pharmacy, cafés and restaurants are a short walk away, and a lift serves the building.



The Space:

Spread across two floors and linked by an internal spiral staircase, Nini's Maison feels like a real family home. The living room is bright and generous, with a pair of coral sofas, an armchair and built in shelving. A second seating area by the window frames the city and the hills beyond. Well stocked bookshelves and a writing desk give you a quiet place to read or catch up on work, and a treadmill by the windows lets you fit in a morning run before you have even stepped outside. Air conditioning keeps the rooms comfortable through the warmer months.



You can choose where to eat. A formal dining room under a crystal chandelier sets the scene for long dinners together. The fully equipped kitchen has warm wooden cabinetry, an oven, a microwave and everything else you might need during your stay, along with its own table for relaxed breakfasts. An elegant entrance hall with a gilded mirror welcomes you as you arrive.



Both bedrooms have a queen size bed, plenty of wardrobe space, and they open directly onto large balconies. The bathroom has a corner bathtub for a long soak after a day at the beach, and a separate WC makes mornings easier when everyone is getting ready at once.



The terraces are the heart of the home. There's a marble table in the open air, and views across the rooftops to the mountains. They are made for slow morning coffee and warm evenings under the sky.



Guest Access:

The entire maisonette is yours, set across the fifth and sixth floors with a lift serving the building and an internal spiral staircase linking the two levels. The terraces on the upper floor are private, so every view and every evening outdoors belongs to you and your group.



The Neighborhood:

Nini's Maison sits in the heart of Kalamata, the lively capital of Messinia, set between the Messinian Gulf and the slopes of Mount Taygetos. This is a city of pedestrian streets, busy cafés and a long seafront promenade. It suits guests who want everyday ease with the sea and mountains close by. A well stocked supermarket is about 200 metres away and a pharmacy just 50 metres from the door, with restaurants, banks and the main shopping streets all within an easy walk.



The city beach, about 2.5 km away, runs for kilometres beside the promenade with sand, pebbles, sunbeds and beach bars. Almyros at Verga, around 6 km east, has fine pebbles, deep clear water, and SUP and kayak rentals. Mikri Mantineia, about 10 km away, is a Blue Flag beach of white pebbles with tavernas along the shore and a sea water park for children. Santova, around 12 km away, is the sandy favourite for beach bar afternoons. Kitries, about 15 km along the coast, is a quiet pebble cove beside a fishing harbour.



Taygetos rises right behind the city, with walking trails through its olive covered foothills. The Polylimnio waterfalls, about 25 km west, form a chain of emerald pools. The Viros Gorge near Kardamyli, around 35 km away, is one of the great walks of the Mani.



Closer to home, the Municipal Railway Park is about 0.5 km away and the central market about 1.5 km. The old town, the Church of Ypapanti and the Archaeological Museum of Messenia are around 1 km away, with the Castle of Kalamata crowning the hill above them. Ancient Messene, one of the best preserved ancient cities in Greece, is about 30 km away.



Kalamata is known worldwide for its olives and olive oil, and the market is the place for figs, pasteli and Messinian sausage flavoured with orange.



Getting Around:

Kalamata International Airport is about 10 km from the apartment, so arrivals are quick and easy. The port of Kalamata, around 1.5 km away, is the departure point for summer sailings to Kythira and Kissamos in western Crete, and its marina and waterfront cafés make for a pleasant walk in any season. Α city bus stop is 45m away. The KTEL Messinias bus station, about 1.5 km away, has regular coaches to Athens and towns across the Peloponnese. The centre is easy to explore on foot, and a car lets you make the most of the region, from the beaches of the eastern coast to the villages of the Mani and the ruins of Ancient Messene.



Other Things to Note:

Kalamata rewards those who take it slowly, and the terrace at Nini's Maison is the best place to start.
