Outstanding Cabin in the Woods
Nestled among the ponderosa pines on a gentle slope above the West Fork of the Little Colorado River, and a few hundred feet from other cabins, this cabin was a delight the moment we walked in the front door.
It was a little tricky finding the right cabin, but the photo on the check-in sheet allowed us to identify it after one false start.
The cabin exceeded our expectations. Everything worked (except the carousel in the microwave), appliances were modern, heater was efficient, hot water was almost instantaneous, Wi-Fi was strong, DirecTV was just like home, and the fireplace (with abundant firewood in the adjacent shed) was a cheerful touch to warm the brisk evenings. The gas barbecue on the porch was just what we needed to grill the steaks for the dinner to celebrate the April birthdays of three of the four people in the cabin.
The cabin is far enough from the river so that its sound doesn't drown out the sounds of nature at the cabin--the spring migration of birds hadn't peaked yet here at 8,400 feet elevation, but we enjoyed hearing the songs and calls of Dark-eyed Juncos, American Robins, Steller's Jays, and a Southwestern Red (or Fremont's) Squirrel.
Our only concern: we were very disappointed to see several rodenticide bait stations around the outside of the cabin. Rodenticides have a harmful ripple effect in the environment: poisoned target animals are eaten by and kill predators higher in the food chain (owls, coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, etc.).
