"The entrance to check in was not obvious from the outside when we arrived and the hotel is isolated in its location. However, staff were friendly, the room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was good."

"The inn was okay and the staff were nice. Couldn’t sleep though which is the point of a hotel. Had a road facing room and could hear every single car as it sped by. Torture. The shower was also maybe the worst I’ve had in the last 5 years of constant travel. Felt like someone held a pinched hose over me and there was no water pressure at off peak shower times. "

"Comfy room, generous towels. Arrived late Friday evening, no bother getting a table in the pub downstairs for food- they don't take table reservations, so I wasn't at a disadvantage. Good wide choice on the menu and attentive service. There was a nightwatchman for after hours- what a treasure! He showed me how to access once the pub was closed, helped me empty the bags from the car and carried them to our room all with a friendly, nothing was too much trouble approach. "We stayed in room 102 (cosy room) a lovely little room over looking the gardens. The room was clean and spacious with a walk in shower. We had breakfast which was delicious , served by Rachel the hotel manager, she was bubbly and very approachable giving plenty of suggestions for our trip. The hotel is normally busy but turned out we were the only guest for the evening which made for a peaceful stay (no complaints here) "

"A really good location to stop overnight and very happy with the room. Breakfast was delivered in a hamper box outside our room and was rather disappointing. No egg/cold meats option. The main option was oats with fruit. We ordered with banana and strawberry. Tiny amount of strawberry and the banana slices were dried and chewy. But the evening meal was good honest pub grub."

"It’s so hard to find the quintessential English pub these days but the shoulder of mutton hits the spot. The food was home cooked and great, not prepackaged Pub was clean, no damp or mould The view from the beer garden was amazing overlooking the valley The room was Pub basic but clean and not mouldy. Price point was spot on Publican and chef fantastic Highly recommend"

"We stay here regularly whilst visiting family. I love it because everyone is very friendly, the beds are super comfy and there is a bath in the bathroom. It's walking distance into town even after a few drinks in the very reasonably priced bar! It's dog friendly too. Big carpark and surprisingly quiet after the bar closes. Usually football on the TV in the bar which keeps my husband happy (depending on play...) 😅 The Highfield is always our first choice when planning to come to Boro."

"Review of two night stay at Hotel 52, Stanley from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th May 2026 Check-in was online only which required a smartphone and a reliable Wi-Fi signal, there are no reception staff on site during the normal working day. The outer door was automatic so anyone could walk in. After collecting our key from a key safe we went to find our room. There was a security toggle with the key to open inner doors of the hotel but none of the security locks functioned so anyone could access all...

"I stay here on a regular basis when I travel between Glasgow and the south. The hotel is a grand old building in a beautiful little hamlet off the A1 with lots of history. Due to this and the fact its family owned and not part of a huge chain, it’s a bit worn in places but it’s clean, comfortable and cosy with plenty of charm and quirks.. The staff are lovely, welcoming, very helpful and do their best to make your stay a good one. There’s a spa, a bar and a restaurant, the food is delicious...

"We had a lovely 2 day break at the Park Head Hotel. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly. Breakfast and dinner were delicious and top quality. Our dog, Tilly was well looked after too. Barnard castle and the surrounding area are beautiful with some great walks along the river."
