Alternatively: Wolthuser Warf 2, a modern architect-designed house next door
A vacation in idyllic tranquility, yet close to the center of Emden.
Our charming vacation home is located in a small, historic village on the banks of the Ems-Jade Canal, surrounded by old farmsteads, the canal, and expansive meadows. Despite its quiet location, you can reach Emden’s city center—with its maritime charm, sights, cafés, and museums—in just about 20 minutes on foot, walking right along the canal.
The former farmworker’s house, built in 1856, has been lovingly and thoroughly renovated and equipped with modern touches such as a large glass addition, underfloor heating in the kitchen-diner, and a wood-burning stove in the living room. This makes it wonderfully cozy even in winter or during typical East Frisian dreary weather.
Original features such as exposed wooden beams, the traditional “Upkammer” (loft), and the original wooden floor in the attic lend the house a special charm.
Living & Well-Being
On the first floor, you’ll find a bright, approximately 20 m² country-style kitchen-diner with large windows, a ceramic cooktop, an oven, a SMEG refrigerator with a large freezer compartment, and a dishwasher. Underfloor heating ensures pleasant warmth in the kitchen and bathroom.
The bathroom was completely modernized in the winter of 2024/25: it features a walk-in shower at floor level, a washing machine, and a practical utility area—with direct access to the garden.
The large living room offers a smart TV (including access to your own streaming services such as Netflix or Prime Video) as well as a cozy wood-burning stove for the cold season. Of course, a high-speed internet connection is available.
The upstairs bedroom to the right of the entrance features a comfortable double bed (space available for a travel crib). The walls were re-insulated in 2024/25, and blackout curtains ensure a restful night’s sleep.
A space-saving staircase leads to the upper floor, where you’ll find a spacious studio with a double bed that can be converted into two single beds if needed. Old wooden floorboards, sloped ceilings, and numerous skylights create a particularly cozy atmosphere here.
Garden & Terrace
From the kitchen, you have direct access to the wind-protected, southeast-facing terrace—ideal for a leisurely breakfast or a barbecue evening. A small, south-facing garden area with a lawn invites you to relax. The garden is largely fenced in—perfect for dogs!
Vacation with Your Dog
Pets are warmly welcome! Right outside the door begins a wonderful walking trail along the Ems-Jade Canal—where dogs are allowed off-leash.
If you’d like to take your four-legged friend to the beach: The nearest dog-friendly beach is at Knock (Jannes-Ohling-Straße 39), just a few minutes away. Also lovely: the section of the dike from the Campen Lighthouse to Upleward, where dogs are allowed to run free.
Surroundings & Excursions
Right from the house, there are numerous opportunities for walking, jogging, biking, or inline skating.
The walk to downtown Emden follows the canal—past landmarks such as the Kesselschleuse lock, the harbor, museum ships, and the Kunsthalle Emden.
In recent years, Emden has evolved from being purely a “VW city” into a lively, tourist-friendly port city with a wide range of attractions.
From here, you can easily explore all of East Frisia and the North Sea islands—whether by car, bus, or bike.
Particularly worthwhile: a trip to Greetsiel, Norddeich (beach, seal sanctuary, Waloseum), or a day trip to Borkum—the ferry terminal is only 5 km away. The Dutch border (30 min.) and the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg (1 hr.) are also within easy reach.
