The Gulfhof is a historic farmhouse. It is a timber-frame building constructed using the post-and-beam method and is typical of East Frisia.
This farmstead was first mentioned in 1764 and was rebuilt after war damage using, among other things, oak trees from the garden. The barn houses six horse stalls, which are once again “inhabited” following a loving restoration.
You can experience the charm of the building’s history up close among original doors dating from 1900 and beneath the historic beams.
A magnificent, large farm garden surrounds the historic building, bordered by a wide ditch—also known as a “Gracht”—as well as a rich, old grove of trees, some of which are over 100 years old. Right in the middle, we’ve set up a swing for children, where kids of all ages can swing high into the air. Depending on the season, the garden also captivates visitors with fruit trees, beautifully blooming rhododendron bushes in magnificent colors, a magnolia tree, and a sea of wood anemones, daffodils, snowdrops, crocuses, daisies, and dandelions. Rose beds adorn the entrance area. Our guests are welcome to help themselves to the cut flowers and fruit from the trees, all free of pesticides. The garden invites you to play and listen to the birdsong, as the birds “chat” in various pitches right nearby. In the evening, on a clear night, the sunset captivates the eye against the impressive East Frisian sky. You can see and hear all of this while barbecuing on the terrace. During the day, you can experience the freedom of Friesland up close on cycling tours as you let your gaze wander over the green meadows to the horizon.
A flowering meadow and an insect hotel have been set up for the insects. Behind the farmhouse is a large paddock drained by “Grüppen”—a system worth noting because it’s the original, historic form of drainage that runs lengthwise across the pasture. In lower-lying areas, shallow pools or puddles form during wetter months, where frogs, ducks, and often storks can be observed. Thanks to the favorable living conditions for storks, a pair of storks has taken up residence this year on the newly installed nesting aid.
