Campofelice di Roccella, is a small town with Norman-Arabic origins, under the ancient Greek colony influence of Himera, it is overlooked from the west by the town of Termini Imerese and from the east by the peninsula of Cefalù. The first clear references of the territory of Roccella and its castle seem to date back to Muslim chronicles. On the 14th of June 827 the armed Arabs, led by Ased-Benforat or Asad Ibn al-Furat docked at Mazara, climbed the Belice valleys and faced the Byzantine army. The conquering of the island began along with the occupation of the coastal towns and ended in 965 with the downfall of Rometta, the last fortress of the Byzantine’s. The Muslim chronicles detailed the attack on a castle going by the name Qasr al Gadid, or alternatively Qasr al-Hadid, meaning “Castle of iron”. Henri Bresc, identified the Qasr with the roccella castle not far from the town of Cefalù which the Arabs conquered that same year.
