This is a tricky review to write as some things about Sweetfield Manor were very good but others were not. Firstly, the place advertises itself as a 5 star boutique hotel, boutique is correct, 5 star definitely not.
The room itself was spotlessly clean and very comfortable with an excellent shower room. However, the first thing that we were told when being shown to the room was that there were two small bottles of water which were complimentary but any further water would have to be bought - surely two small bottles of water a day is not too much to ask for given the price we paid.
We ate in the restaurant on two occasions and, although the food was fine, there were many items on the menu that were "not available today".
The staff were generally helpful and friendly although the barman on the first evening seemed to find serving us was an inconvenience.
The buildings and grounds could certainly do with some major maintenance. It is obviously a heritage building but that doesn't excuse missing and broken spindles on the staircase and the exterior of the building needs refurbishing.
The pool was lovely but again, the area around it looked unloved. There was a terrace just outside reception which had tables and parasols but no chairs so could not be used.
This place could be really fabulous with some money and effort but I would not stay there again unless there was evidence of a major refurbishment.
The peacocks however were fabulous!
