Headed upstate to visit out daughter who is doing a summer stock internship in Glens Falls (Adirondack Theatre Festival--check it out!). If you love the scenic, quiet and bucolic places, this is it. The house was spacious, cozily decorated and comfortable. The property is situated in the middle of a wildlife sanctuary, featuring birds--so many birds! There are a few feeders around the deck which affords great views of the dozens of species flying around all day. (The birds never left because we refilled the feeders often.) The town itself, Salem (slogan: "in the middle of everywhere!") is very small and quiet. We asked the lovely shopkeeper at Two Black Dogs Winery (in Cambridge) and she sent us to the following places: Yushack's, where they make their own sausages--like 32 kinds--and amazing sandwiches. Georgi museum, featuring a local swimming hole on the Battenkill River where the water was crystal clear; SAW (Salem Art Works), an artist collective where we met Jordan who led us on an impromptu tour; Garden Works, where we met Layla the Golden Retriever who loves nothing more than belly rubs; Battenkill Creamery where we had the best ice cream every day; Hand Melon Farms for berry picking; great antique shops, the names of which I forgot. Honestly, everyone we came in contact with in all these little businesses in all these little towns were friendly and gracious. Homeowner Pat was gracious as well, and very helpful. It was. a sweet little trip that even my teenagers enjoyed. Thinking of retiring there some day!
