Description

The Hoover Dam is a short drive from the fast-paced Vegas Strip, and this tour allows you to venture into the beautiful Mojave Desert and uncover the rich history and planning behind the Hoover Dam. Built in 1935, the massive concrete dam was once the world's largest power-producing facility and now remains a world-renowned feat of engineering.

Hop aboard a comfortable air-conditioned bus for a scenic drive through the cactus-lined desert, checking out the flora and fauna of this arid landscape as you make your way toward Hoover Dam. Towering 725 feet (220 m) above the Colorado River, the dam is one of the largest concrete structures on the planet.

Head inside the Hoover Dam and take the Power Plant Tour to marvel at the 17 turbine generators at work and learn how they transform flowing water into enough electricity to power a major portion of the American Southwest. Walk through the facility and listen to your guide describe historic details of the structure's controversies, tragedies, and first-of-its-kind technology.

Next, step out for a view of the Arizona Spillway, which tunnels water from Lake Mead deep into the canyon walls through a chute wide enough to fit a WWII battleship. From atop a lookout that also happens to be the perfect viewpoint, enjoy panoramic vistas of Lake Mead and its vivid desert backdrop.

Enjoyed my return visit but was surprised by the decrease in water levels. Unimpressed by the snack bar/restaurant and thought pricing was outrageous!

Did not have enough actual time at the dam. Had to wait at several hotels for people to come to the bus. Waited over 15 minutes at 3 different hotels because people were not at the pickup spot we were told to be at. The 45 extra minutes we sat waiting on people to show up took that time away from the trip we had paid for.
