Description

Immerse yourself in the pre-Columbian history and culture of Mexico on this guided tour of the National Museum of Anthropology. Learn fascinating facts about Aztec and Maya civilizations while admiring ancient headdresses, stone statues, and reconstructed tombs.

Make your way to the National Museum of Anthropology, the largest and most visited in Mexico. Begin your exploration on the ground floor, slowly uncovering the museum's thousands of archaeological artifacts. Listen as your guide reveals the mythology of Mesoamerican cultures and how they've influenced Mexican society today.

Marvel at the colossal stone heads of the Olmec civilization, which date back as far as the Early Preclassic Period. Step inside the Maya room to see a vast collection of staggering murals, as well a replica of the intricate lid of Pakal's tomb. Just down the hall, discover a small-scale model of the ancient capital of Tenochtitlan, the area known today as Mexico City. Here, you can also find the centerpiece of the museum's collection, the Aztec Stone of the Sun. Dating back to the 1400s, this calendar been has been regarded archaeologist Zelia Nullal as the " remarkable monument ever unearthed on the American Continent.”

Finish your day of discovery upstairs, where the galleries offer insight into present-day indigenous populations. See how the descendants of the Aztecs and Maya live today, with objects ranging from household items to art and religious artifacts.

This tour was a complete rip off. Antonio was a nice man but he didn't have enough English to conduct the tour. Also it was a huge group (you couldnt hear him). There were also Spanish speaking particioants when it was supposed to be only English which slowed everything down. We had booked for 4 people and we decided to leave the tour and do it on our own after 45 minutes. Many other people were complaining as well. I think other people may have left the tour as well. I demanded my money back U.S. $75 but as yet ive heard nothing. We booked 2 ither tours while we were in Mexico City (with other tour companies) and they were excellent.

We had a fantastic time with our guide (Rosa Maria) at the Museum of Anthropology. She was very knowledgeable and communicated with us very well in English. We learned a lot and had a terrific experience thanks to her. Thank you!
